Day 142: Check Your Wheat Bread!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

For so long I've been hearing, Make sure your wheat bread is 100% whole wheat. So that's what I've been doing (for the kids, I eat gluten free). Well, yesterday I was at Walmart getting bread and a few other things and I was trying to decide which brand. I learned once again why you should always look at labels EVEN on something as innocent as wheat bread. One of the top 2 or 3 ingredients in the 100% Whole Wheat bread was... yep, you guessed it, High Fructose Corn Syrup!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I thought I had been doing so good getting all of that out of the kids diet and here it's been hiding in their bread! I checked a few different ones and it was the same in Walmart brand, Nature's Own (I was surprised by that), and Merita. BUT Merita does have a Smart Wheat that is 100% Whole Wheat but does not have the HFCS in it. I got that one. It's a little more than Walmart but less than some others. Just thought I would share. I had never thought to look before.

Time to weigh in!

It's sickening how many products have HFCS in them :(

I am hopeful that it will change when more people realize how bad it is and stop buying products that have it in them.

We can make a difference!

WoW! Thanks for the reminder/warning. I don't eat a lot of actual bread but the sandwich rounds and tortillas beause of carb content..... but stil I have bread every now and then and when I want whole wheat I sure don't want the sugary stuff... especially being a diabetic.

Also, sometimes brands change ingredients so you still have to check them after you've found one you've approved. emoticon

I know I spent some time in the stores checking all the breads and it is sad to say that the majority of them have HFCS. I thnk we need to get together and write petitions to these companies for them to discontinue using the stuff. I'd also like to see some of the sodium removed from many of the products we consume. I just don't think it's necessary. I believe this is part of the weight problem that is affecting more and more people. emoticon

That happened to me as well when I was looking for breads. The Sara Lee said 100% whole wheat. One time I looked at the label and it had HFCS.Thank you for the reminder.

Thanks for the information on the wheat bread. I will have to start looking at the label for that. Congrats on the 46 pounds too!

Morning Sara!!!! Thank you for the Wheat Bread info. It's so hard to eat healthy. It's a shame!!!

I hope you have a fabulous day! Don't let the minor gain get to you. I am sure it's just water weight and will be gone in no time!!! *HUG*

It's frustrating. Hate the darn advertising games they play! I end up putting back 80% of the things I pick up.

It is very important to read food labels. I forget what brand it is, but it is 100% ww and there's no HFCS. I wish more companies would be more responsible about ingredients they put in their foods. The obesity rate is ridiculous. I also think if the price of truly healthy foods would come down, more families would be able to provide a healthy diet for their families... Of course there are those who could care less what they put into their bodies or their kids bodies (my family growing up, one reason I got to where I was). I hope my new habits inspire all of my children to do this for themselves and for their families when that time comes (hopefully not anytime soon!).

HFCS is hiding everywhere. Now they have changed the name to just corn sugar and several other variations. The other day I found a President's Choice brand that is very good. I try not to eat a lot of bread but it's hard to have a pbj sandwich without it. LOL

reading food labels is a real eye opener these days. the more unprocessed food in our diets, the better - good job finding the healthiest choice! emoticon
