Race Day!

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Well, I promised my friends I'd run "with" them this morning, as they began their races at the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon/Half Marathon. True to form, I was up bright and early...even before the sun rose (so excited for them!) Out the door and got on the trail ready for a great run!

This was a challenging one for me because I was having major issues with my music player, so my concentration wasn't that great. BUT...I felt great and actually went 4 entire miles with my buddies...figured since it was race day, it couldn't hurt to go the extra mile with them.

Sweating "alongside" my friends early in the morn!

Sad to say, the marathon was called early due to extreme heat. I have not yet heard how WONDERWOMAN or ABSOLUTZER0 are doing...and I am concerned. I spoke with Robert (ON2VICTORY) who explained that it was absolutely treacherous and there were hundreds of people sent to the hospital because of the heat. The course had to be at least 90 degrees and the humidity was awful. That's about all I know and I will let Robert tell you his personal story of the day in his own words - he's so great at describing things.

Sending up some serious prayers for those runners today...especially all that have suffered from heat-related injuries. And our friends that we have not yet heard from. All that being said, it was great to hear Robert's voice and know that he made it through safely. And, even with the extreme conditions, his time was looking really great before the race was called...I truly believe he would have achieved a personal best today. This is absolutely remarkable. Talk about a hardcore athlete.

Well, just wanted to pass on the update. Thank you for those that ran with us this morning or walked or worked out at 7am. How very special of you to join and support these amazing folks. What an excellent community we have here on SparkPeople!!!

Have a great day everyone and stay healthy and safe!!!!

I walked the 1/2 and got as far as mile 9.6 when they called it. It was warm and we saw one girl down and being attended too. The people that ran sprinklers/hoses were awesome as were all the volunteers that manned the water stations. Even tho we drank lots on the route, still felt off at the end. The fitting finale was instead of a ride back to Lambeau in a Lamers bus, they loaded about 25 stinky, sweaty people in the back of a Penzky truck. Thank goodness they kept the back open or a new smell might have been vomit!
Today it's beautiful, high of 67 or so. What a difference a day makes!
Good job supporting your friends!

Way to go. You look sweet in sweat. I'm hoping when I get where I can run a 5K it will be cooler (by Florida's standards).

I did a 5K on Sturday. I guess I am really "odd"--I don't run with music or work out with music. I think about "stuff" or spend the time praying--really goes fast when I do that!

Glad you got a good workout!

Thanks for the update. I ran my first 5k yesterday and the heat was awful. I ended up having to walk some of it because it was so hot. Keep up the hard work. Nice job on the 4 miles!

Thanks for being there with us. I am so inspired by your support and personal motivation. You and I really were in sync - when I went to turn on my iPod, it was DEAD. Something wrong there because I just charged it before I left home. 13.1 miles sans music was a first for me. I did really well and came in at 2:18; just before they closed the course. I hope to get a blog up later tonight or in the morning. I texted with Robert, but never saw him. I caught up with Nick on the course and chatted for a bit. You are right, what a great community we have here.

I was thinking about you while I was out there. Thanks for doing that! It was indeed hot and there is going to be a very entertaining blog to follow. I may work on it tonight.

They closed the course, but I went on and although I added some extra miles since they took up the mile markers at the end. However, I was able to run through the finish line and get a medal. I'm not a medal person, but this one definitely means something to me for a number of reasons.

Moral Support is always appreciated in every activity like this, and my prayers will go up before bedtime tonight for those who may be affected by the heat injuries. May everyone bounce back with the knowledge of the lessons intended and zero pain or permanent injury, Amen!

Congrats on running 4 miles with your friends. That's a bummer that the race was called... it sounds like it should have been called a little sooner than it was though. I hope everyone is ok!

I exercised (and thought and prayed for everyone, including YOU!) as I'd promised, at 7 a.m. I thought it was just so very neat to have that solidarity of all of us exercising at the same time!!

You are a real inspiration to me! emoticon
