A walk is more than a walk

Sunday, May 20, 2012

My husband and I like to walk and here in NW Iowa we have many trails that we can choose from. Today we went out of town north and this trail goes past fields and water areas. We were almost to our turn around point and on the side of the trail was a huge turtle-1/2 on the trail and 1/2 on the grassy area. She had dug a hole and we think she was laying her eggs. We didn't know what else she could have been doing. She didn't look like she was stuck and couldn't move. Tonight we are going to go back to that location and see if she's still there. Next we saw two geese with their 5 babies on the trail and heading to the little pond. It was fun watching them keep their flock together and protect them against "us". We also saw a yellow bird with some black and we knew it wasn't a goldfinch. I guess we are going to have to get a book about Iowa birds. Last fall we removed all the old bluebird houses and put new ones up. My husband made more than 15 houses for the trails we walk.
So for us a walk is more than the exercise we are getting, it's enjoying nature.

Your area sounds like where we live! It's farm country, and I enjoy the wildlife and birds. We had 5 cardinal pairs at our feeder last week. Sometimes it's a little too close for comfort, though. Once I snuck down to the creek to take care of some business. When I heard a twig snap, I looked and there was a porcupine! Ouch! Pulled up my britches and got out of there in a hurry.

It sounds glorious. Adds so much interest to a walk in a beautiful area. We have to drive to get anywhere interesting here in the Thames Valley.

I too love to walk in the woods with my husband. They are my favorite moments. Always. I love that your husband makes blue bird houses. It is always so lovely to put energy into a place you get energy from.

LOVE that birdhouse idea...you can call each and every one of them your own little nest! I bet the birds LOVE you for being so thoughtful! We'd love to see pics if you ever have a few minutes to post. emoticon

Sounds wonderful! If that turtle is still there, or you do discover a nest, I think there are local agencies who will come an block it off to protect it.

Spring is such a wonderful time to go for walks in nature! Everything is coming back to life again, whether plant life, or birds and animals having their young. I find that nature walks are as restorative to the soul and spirit as they are healthy for the body! emoticon

This is my favorite part of walking outside and especially when you go off the beaten trail. There is so much to look at and see in nature.
