Another Eating Challenge (uh-oh)

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Next week is National Community Transportation week, those mini buses you see, or may ride, running around your county. Thanks to a scholarship, I will be leaving early tomorrow morning for a week long transportation conference and bus Roadeo located at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. Here I go again. Nervous about what will I eat, how will I stay on plan, how will I get walks in, etc., etc., etc.. Why does this make me so nervous?!?!

Each trip is a learning experience in how to successfully cope with new circumstances, new well meaning people who ply with food, coping with those standardized meals (I order diabetic, but the meal never meets my eating needs).

What did I learn from the last trip? Having "snacks" on hand helped. Preplanning time for exercise and a back-up plan if I can't eat the meal (that is what snacks are for). Realistically the only exercise I will have will be walking. Wish I had a pedometer, but I can use my watch to guesstimate. What do I need to learn from this trip? Not knowing the Baltimore area will be a challenge in finding affordable deli's or grocery stores to replenish that are within walking distance. When I see the schedule of workshops and free time I will need to tweak my eating plan to match. Have a careful plan when attending the pure carb and alcohol related cocktail hours ( seltzer in a wine glass can look elegant).

It is so comforting to be able to share these thoughts with you who understand. Always appreciate your thoughts. Will let you know how the week is going.

emoticon i do understand!!! there are real challenges to any sort of changes in our home schedules, and it sounds like you are finding ways! Enjoy the conference & let us know how it went! I'm sure you'll get by, as you make 1 simple choice after another as you live through each meal, snack & free period :)

Having snacks on hand is key. I don't have much more to add because I think that IOEINC has given you some great tips. Keep up the good work and keep your eye on the prize, i.e. emoticon emoticon

You can always ask the conceirge of your hotel where you can find delis/grocery stores within walking distance.Remember you can't go wrong with a salad, keeping in mind portion control and the dressing. Remember you how well you did on the last conference. I am sure you will do just as well with this one. Have a great time. Wish I was going with you. Haven't been to the Inner Harbor since my kids were younger. We live about two hours away so it is a doable day trip for us, we just never think to go there now with our kids grown. So again..have a great time!!!
