My accomplishments for 5-17-2012. (Rant too?!)

Friday, May 18, 2012

Oh come tomorrow I will not have much accomplished AT ALL since I am deciding to take a REST day today (from cardio) because I have a long run of 11 miles tomorrow morning.

Before I go to my accomplishments I wanted to "talk" some.

I realized something yesterday...I had a HELLISH run yesterday. I have been having ALOT of hellish runs recently....I realized I do fine UNTIL the sun comes out. My short runs are done early morning (6:00) but the sun is already up. SO the run is REALLY hard. On my long run this past Sat..I did wonderful until 8-9 miles when the SUN came up. I realized I feel the SAME WAY every time. The sun hits me & my mouth gets dry, I get tingly, I get hot, & my heart is racing/pounding. I do not mean pounding like NO duh your running pounding I mean like it is harder to control my breathing, my heart wont slow down kind of pounding.

So I asked the group on facebook called FACEBOOK runners what they think might be the problem. NOT medical advice just OPINIONS.

Few things I got were:
Not enough electrolytes.
Low blood sugar
Drinking too much water.

Now I believe all those make complete sense. I do not replace my electrolytes to begin with when running cause I can not stand sweet drinks when running. I have run with Powerade Zero before on long runs and it was fine but when racing FOR SURE I get nausea. So I do not wan to drink something during training that I can NOT drink during racing. The other one about blood sugar...well yes that makes sense too BECAUSE when I have had issue with it I first get hungry then I get shaky, dizzy, light headed, & feeling of fainting which is what I also felt yesterday EXCEPT I did not get hungry. Now the last thing...drinking too much water..well that goes right back to electrolytes. I drink 27-31 8 oz cups of water a day so that IS ALOT of water. It would not be THAT big of a deal IF I was replacing electrolytes I THINK because with all the water I drink it makes sense that it is washing away all the nutrients.

I drink that much water because I WANT TO not because I am thirsty. When I am a little hungry I reach for water to make sure it is not thirst and usually it goes away. Or because I can not afford any food calories because I have consumed all I am allowed.

I stated these things on there as well....

Then it turned into a eating disorder thing. Seriously?! I eat. I eat all my calories! I eat MORE calories now then I was in past. I eat above my minimum. Maybe not much sometimes but I EAT! Am I eating enough? I HAVE NO IDEA!!! I can not go to a nutritionist or a dr to find out because I do not have insurance and can not afford to be pulling $ from my butt to pay!

I even got some running is not for you, or do some shadow boxing, I got HARSH crap thrown at me. ALOT of eating disorder crap too.

I need to figure this heat thing out because I run in the heat and it is ONLY going to get worse!! ESPECIALLY cause I start MARATHON training REAL SOON which means ALOT of running in heat!!

Another thing is I do not get how I do not get enough salt either when I consume ALOT of sodium in my foods. I get like 4000 mg of sodium! Now for those who are going to say HOLY CRAP that is alot of sodium...I do not bloat...I am not retaining water...I am not swollen...and my BP is fine.

NOW..onto my accomplishments!

My accomplishments for yesterday were:

emoticon Ran for 1 hour.
emoticon Read the days worth of comments/blogs for SP.
emoticon Did upper body ST'ing.
emoticon I blogged!
emoticon I put away the counter full of dishes.
emoticon I took care & deposited $ business that has needed to be done for a couple weeks.
emoticon Went to store to get the weeks worth of loose items for breakfast. SUch as eggs, oatmeal, etc stuff we ran out of before monthly shopping.
emoticon Drank 27 8 oz cups of water.

That's all folks!
XOXOXO

I think you are worrying about it too much. Every year I have a hard time at the begining of the summer with the heat then get used to it by the end of the summer. Don't stress about it you are doing everything right.

Potassium! You are probably depleting it with the water. As I remember you don't eat a ton of fruits and veggies either? High sources are lima beans (1000 mg. or so), low sodium tomato juice (800 something), coconut water (500 something), greens like swiss chard and spinach (like 800-1000). Sweating just makes this worse!

Also, if you are really stressed out, that can affect your adrenals and then you will not adapt to the heat as well as this is another big stress on the body. DO what you can to minimize it, I know you have a tough situation! emoticon

no advice for you-I know that running in the heat is harder but no clue as to your issues. and I am very glad that you are eating more-b/c for a while you were NOT. But, you're doing great now!
So, great job on yesterday's day of water and food and exercise.....
Have a great weekend!

Holy heck, you drink a lot of water!

I feel water-logged with the 8 to 10 8-oz glasses I force myself to drink each day. Good for you!

I'm sorry you got such criticism when all you wanted was some advice. That's a bummer. I have to say though, that I have the exact same problem when I run in the sun. I literally can't STAND running once the sun is beating on me. It's super uncomfortable, I pant as if it were my first run, and I usually end up with a headache (the main reason I prefer to run in the dark hours of the morning) - Miserable! And to back you up, I KNOW I eat a good amount of food and drink plenty of water and I really don't ever run that hard. So, I'm wondering how these folks have come to the conclusion that you have an eating disorder???

Try coconut water for your electrolytes...

The opinions do sound valid. It probably is a combination of low blood sugar and low electrolytes that is enhanced by all the water.
