MY MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND
Monday, May 14, 2012
First off I want to say I hope all you mothers had a great Mother’s Day yesterday.
I had a very busy and emotional weekend. We left Norfolk Thursday (5-10-12) morning to head to Colorado for my son’s graduation from Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO on Friday. We checked into out room Thursday evening. Bethannie and I promptly changed and headed to the pool/whirlpool area for a while.
Friday morning we got dressed and headed to the school for the graduation. While sitting outside in the commons area waiting for the ceremony to start we noticed snowflakes falling. There wasn’t a lot of snow but just a few flakes here and there. The ceremony took 2.5 hours by the time they got all the diplomas handed out in 3 different degree areas. After the ceremony, the group of us headed to Casa Bonita’s for lunch to celebrate the graduation. It was an interesting place but I wasn’t impressed with the service that we got while we were there. After lunch we all headed to Trevor’s place to hang out until having supper. Trevor’s former Big Brother from the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program took the group of us (13 people total) out for supper to celebrate Trevor’s graduation. The restaurant was really nice. My daughter started looking at the menu to see what she was going to order. She leaned over to me and said she didn’t know what to do as she has never seen prices like there was on that menu. I told her to pick something out and order it, don’t look at the price. We all had a great time, good food and great conversation while at the restaurant. We then headed back to the motel and headed to bed.
The next morning we did it all over again. We got dressed and headed to the chapel a couple blocks from where the graduation was held the day before. The chapel was small, intimate and beautiful. There were 3 cadets that were being commissioned that morning. Trevor was the first of the 3 to be commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the army. He took his oath then his dad and I were asked to come to the front of the chapel to “pin” his bars on his shoulder. After we finished that we took our seats and his older brother Sean a member of the Army National Guard came forward dressed in his Class A uniform to give Trevor his first salute and to receive a coin from Trevor. After the other 2 cadets were commissioned we all went to the side room for a reception. Trevor was given a large place with the commissioning certificate. Each newly commissioned Lieutenant had a separate table with their certificate and some candid pictures from their 4 years in the ROTC. When the reception got over, my sons and their dad and sister left. My son had a few graduation parties for some of his friends to attend and then had a party of his own scheduled that evening. My husband, daughter and I went to the Coors brewery for a tour. After the tour we met my husband’s cousin for lunch. When we got through with lunch we all headed up the mountain to Buffalo Bill Cody’s grave and museum. We got there late so really didn’t have a lot of time to look at the stuff in the museum but spend quite a bit of time at the gift shop. While we were there the clouds came in so we couldn’t even see Golden at the base of the mountain. We decided to head down before it got dark in addition to the fog. We stopped for supper and headed back to the motel. It was almost 9:30 so we quickly headed to our room to change and go to the pool. They ended up leaving the pool open later as it was supposed to close at 10 but we didn’t leave until almost 10:30 to head to the room and download the pictures from the camera and start packing for the trip home.
The next morning we packed the car but before heading home we went back to Golden to get pictures of the outside of the chapel and some pictures of the creek running by the Golden Hotel in Golden. This is a beautiful area with a walking trail along each side of the creek and several areas for sitting to watch the flowing creek. We took pictures there and then got in the car to head home. At this time I wanted so much to stay there with my son but couldn’t as I had to get back to work today and he has to pack so he can leave Thursday to take his dad back to Little Rock on his way to Augusta, GA for his communications training before heading to his first duty station at Ft Polk, LA. Overall it was really nice weekend even though there were a few very stressful times over the weekend.
Take care every one and have a great week.
