A week of 2 races.

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Two races in the same week isn't really ideal, but for me these two have been great. On Monday I did the Tees Barrage 10K with great weather conditions after a wet and cold few weeks preceding the race. I know I have a tendency to start out too quickly so I tried to be aware of this for the first few kilometres. As it turned out the start took us along a fairly narrow cycle path so there was not much option but to run with the pack. Once we crossed the bridge the racers began to space out and I settled into a good pace. I decided I would take 30 second walk breaks at each kilometre marker. At the half way point I was at 25 minutes, I couldn't believe I had ran so fast. With this in mind I stopped to say Hi to my daughter, blow my nose, take a drink then press on. I think at 7K I took a minute walk break and felt great for the rest of the race. I finished with a new personal best of 55.03. I was thrilled.

Today it was a 5K race which starts and finishes at the local football stadium. Quite exciting to be doing our warm up on the actual pitch! Another good day with the weather although also windy today. A lot more people in this race as it is not capped like the 10K. The start was in pens, I dithered between sub30 or sub35, but decided on the former. No walk breaks in this one but I did slow down considerably for 30 secs at the 3K marker. I can't really recall a whole lot about the race, it seemed to pass over so quickly. I was doubting whether it really was the correct distance. It felt really good to pass a couple of former Premiership footballers on the way though! The finish line was inside the stadium which meant the end of the race took us around the pitch, great to hear the spectators cheering as we entered the stadium, felt like an Olympian. The only down side was the surface was sand, difficult to keep a foothold.

A sprint to the finish had me crossing the line at 25.23, another PB! Needless to say I felt pretty pleased with myself.

I'm so impressed and happy for you!! The end of your 5K sounds awesome - we have one where we enter the Steelers' stadium at the end and it's so cool.

Hope all is well with you beyond your racing!
