Tomorrow is my birthday. I didn’t know until today but I have given myself the best birthday gift – a healthier lifestyle.
In January of 2012, I heard about SparkPeople for the first time. I signed-up and started receiving emails. No changes at first, but the information was interesting… and the emails kept coming. That little voice inside my head continued to say “You need to get up and move. You need to eat better. You need to follow the advice on these emails!” I guess guilt about my lifestyle choices kicked in high gear and I started considering healthier changes.
It was mid-March when I saw information on Coach Nicole’s 28-Day Boot Camp DVD. I was ready to start exercising and the DVD looked like a good place to start. Heck, I could do anything for 1 month, right? I bought the video, began tracking my food that day and started a journey – a gift to me.
In the eight-weeks since I committed to this new lifestyle, I have lost 12 pounds and gained so much more. I can run a ˝ mile without stopping. I push myself to do the challenges on Coach Nicole’s 28-Day Boot Camp DVD. I fit in clothes I haven’t in a few years. I can eat one cookie and walk away (most of the time – progress not perfection). I eat vegetables and enjoy them. I drink 8 glasses of water a day. I have the confidence that I can do this, that I will do this. I look at myself in the mirror and smile. I am proud of me.
This birthday (37 but don’t tell) I’m looking forward to the coming year and what it has in store. Will I run an entire 5k? Will I be able to do regular push-ups? Will I learn a new sport? Will this be the year I stop shopping in plus size stores? How many new fruits and vegetables will I discover I like? Will my daughters see me as a healthy role model?
So with my birthday just a day away, I’ve already given me the best gift. And this will be my favorite birthday gift this year, and next, and next...
