Long Weekend Away

Had a great weekend in Chicago with my brother, brother-in-law, and 7 year old nephew! Left on Friday and drove back on Monday. Last March when I was at their house for a week was when I finally decided I needed to get serious about my weight and fitness. They eat pretty healthy food - my brother keeps my nephew's sugar intake to a minimum so there was no junk in their house!
Friday night is Whole Foods night at their household. They go to the hot foods bar at WF and fill up a couple of containers with a couple different entrees and sides and then everyone eats what they want. I had a pork dish with some rice. My BIL had also made a dish with broccoli, spinach, and garlic, cooked and then pureed - it was more like a thick sauce. It was delicious and I plan to make it myself soon.
Saturday we had some scrambled eggs and I had a piece of dry sprouted grain toast - very fresh bread and very tasty! We went to the local farm market and my brother got all kinds of interesting healthy foods - sprouts, raw milk cheese, homemade sprouted grain tortillas, and a few veggies - chard, asparagus. For lunch we had the tortillas with the cheese and some organic turkey, and strawberries for dessert.
Saturday night we went out to eat at an Ethiopian restaurant. We each ordered the vegetarian sampler and got to pick four out of twelve different options. I chose a bulgur wheat dish, a carrot/zucchini dish, one with pureed yellow peas and one with pureed red lentils. They do not use utensils there - they bring out the platter of food with a side plate of bread and you kind of grab your food with it. The bread was large and round, kind of like a cross between a crepe and a sponge, although it tasted much better than I make it sound! No dessert that night.
Sunday I took my nephew to brunch at a restaurant that we both love. I got an omelette with spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes. It came with some home fried potatoes - he ate half of those - and a good piece of whole grain bread (just one piece, he ate the other one.) He also ate his plate of pancakes with syrup, a piece of cornbread, a bowl of fruit, and a glass of orange juice. (He didn't order the fruit or cornbread but the kitchen was so slow the server brought them out for him to eat while he waited.) This kid put all this away and I swear you still cannot find an ounce of fat on him. He's a very active kid!
So after that we did not eat again until dinner, which was leftovers of Friday's dinner, tortillas, cheese, and other sandwich choices. I had a little more pork and half a tortilla with cheese on it.
I know I ate a little more than normal, but I think I made choices that were pretty healthy. My weight was up 1/2 pound today, but I am pretty sure that it will come off after a couple of days of normal eating, which started today!
Now all the travel and excitement is behind me for a while and I'm planning to get on track and stay there!
