It's All About Preparation

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Hey there Gang, I'm happy to report that I'm home from the hospital and everything seems to have gone well. I donated just under 10 kg of tissue and skin to the Burn Ward.

I can tell you without a doubt, that the last year of preparation paid off. I now know for sure, that if I had not been in the gym 6 days a week preparing myself physically and mentally for this surgery, I could not have come through it as easily as I did.

Going into the operating room, I knew that I was in the best shape that I could be physically and mentally. My confidence in my surgeon and myself was high , so I was pretty sure that things would go good. We had a bit of a set back that required another trip back to the operating room, but this was not a problem, because my surgeon had prepared me for that eventuality. Although disappointing, I was prepared, and things worked out. My surgeon made some predictions, and all but one of them have come to be, so we are quite confident that we picked the best man for the job.

Considering the facts that I ended up in the operating room twice and that I needed 6 units of blood, I was pleased that I was released after only 7 days. I feel great and would love to get back in the gym. I'm told that I'm about 6 weeks away from that.

As I look forward to my upcoming knee surgeries, I know that I need to get back into the gym as soon as possible to get my body ready for the next assault. I know that preparation will make the difference.

I am so amazed with you, you stuck to your plan, lost the weight and then got prepared and had excess skin removed and to top it off YOU donated it to the BURN UNIT!

I am so glad you mentioned that, I didn't know it was possible to do. How much did you weigh when they allowed you to get the excess skin removed? Did insurance cover it? What was the condition of your health going into the surgery? (diabetic? heart problems etc) Yes, I have a lot of lower stomach hanging and don't like it, but still losing. Do you still have more weight to lose?

Thanks for your answers
I'm so proud of you
Linda

    Dave,
So happy to hear that things went as well as they could and that you are home recovering! I think that is awesome that you were able to help out the burn unit with that donation! And I agree with you that preparation (being the healthiest you can) does help. I recently went through breast cancer surgeries and now that I was was *preparing* for that...I feel the fact that I had lost 60 pounds the years before that THAT helped me bounce back quicker!
Continue wishes for quick healing!

    Dave,

I'm so glad to hear that you are home recovering. Sounds like you were totally prepared - physically and emotionally. That is so cool that you can help burn patients out! I know you are chomping at the bit, but rest up. Let your body heal fully before hitting the gym again.

And congratulations on all your hard work to get to this day!
