A little help from my Sparkfriends?

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

I've got a question for all of you: do you have any recommendations for non-alcoholic no or low calorie drinks that I can order at happy hour?

Here's the reason why I ask. Tomorrow night, I am going to a networking happy hour event hosted by the professional society of the field I am looking to join. Originally it was supposed to be a Central Park walking tour and happy hour networking event but the walking tour got cancelled in anticipation of rain.

I really need to go to this event and do the whole networking thing. However, I really don't feel like drinking (alcohol that is) but I don't want to appear anti-social either by not drinking anything at all. I suppose I could order club soda with lime (and no one will know I'm not drinking a vodka or gin tonic) but I HATE club soda. I suppose I could get just cranberry juice but I don't like drinking empty calories and cranberry juice seems to irritate my stomach.

Is there anything else I could drink to fake the whole "yeah, I'm totally digging this happy hour" thing while I meet new people and hopefully network my way into a job opportunity?

my version of 'tequila sunrise' is club soda with a bit of orange juice and a dash of grenadine syrup. personally i prefer about nine parts water to one part oj, grenadine negligible, for color.

I was going to suggest the Perrier water - I love it, for some reason (and I feel extra fancy when I'm drinking it...) :)

Perrier water with lime or lemon slice. I wouldn't worry about not drinking alcohol...lots of people don't drink either for physical or other reasons. Lately, I don't seem to tolerate alcohol at all (very sad!), so either water or Perrier is my choice.
    Happy Networking!

My personal trainer drinks vodka because she says it's low carb. Woo. Not me.

I don't drink soda at home anymore so when I go out, I order it and that's my indulgence.

Wine is not that bad in calories - usually about 20 per ounce and it has heart benefits.

If you don't want to drink, I wouldn't worry about it (I've had friends make some very bad "career decisions" based on the combo of nerves + one cocktail too many). If someone is crass enough to ask you why you're not drinking, you could always just smile or say you have an upset stomach, or you're training or taking antibiotics for a foot fungus you picked up from all that running you're doing! emoticon

My go-to is already suggested -- the Virgin Bloody Mary. Otherwise seems like you've been given some good options. Good luck and I hope it nets a job for you!

When I'm counting, I go for a vodka tonic or a glass of white wine and set a limit. Or I will get a good cider or beer that may be higher in calories, but I will be more likely to sip it and savor it and then I'll plan my food accordingly.

How about a virgin Bloody Mary? It would give you lots of nutrients in the tomato juice.

CKMATHERLY already suggested everything I thought of. It's tough to avoid a lot of empty calories at things like this, good luck!

Ginger ale with a splash of cranberry? Club soda with a hint of grenadine? It's stronger than just a lime or have the lime too, a light cherry limeade flavor. Or Diet coke with vodka or light rum?

A glass of red wine that you carry around and sip? I say red since it isn't chilled so no sweaty glass or melty ice. I've done this at a few events to be social without needing a cab home.

Or ask for plain still water with a lemon and a lime or other wedge )depends on the place). Just tip the bartender and they are pretty cool about it.
