A couple of years ago, when I was approaching my 40th birthday, I decided that I wanted to lose 40 pounds by my 40th birthday. I thought this idea up in plenty of time for it to be an achievable goal -- my birthday is Oct 31, and I'm pretty sure this awesome idea occurred to me somewhere in March. But, one thing after another happened, I kept putting off the start date by another week, until finally I ran out of weeks. My 40th birthday came, and I hadn't lost 40 pounds. If I recall correctly, I hadn't gained weight since the brilliant idea came to me either. We had a huge Halloween/40th birthday party at our house (Halloween is a big deal at our place -- we do it up big) and I remember buying and wearing a very cool vampire costume (I love vampires). I don't think I'd ever bought a costumer before, because I'd always been too big to fit into anything that I didn't create myself. So while I wasn't ultimately happy with my weight, and I was probably heavier than I'd been the year before, I was still not huge -- I could fit into a store bought costume.
Last Halloween I turned 41. I was so busy with the Halloween party prep that I left costume ideas to the last minute and didn't have time to execute on the plan to be a zombie. I decide to wear the vampire costume again. Sadly, it didn't fit. I mean, I could get it on, but it was tight and uncomfortable. I ended up not bothering with a costume. I knew I'd gained weight, but didn't realize I'd gained enough weight to make that much of a difference in how that costume fit.
When my birthday rolls around again, I don't want to try that costume on again to find out that it's still tight, or worse yet, that I can't get it on at all. If anything, I want to have to get something new because that costume is too big. So I've decided to resurrect the 40 pounds by my 40th birthday idea for this year. Only this year it has to be 42 pounds by my 42nd birthday because hey, that sounds cooler. There are essentially 27 weeks between now and my birthday (give or take a few days). To lose 42 pounds in those 27 weeks, I'll need to lose an average 1.6 pounds per week (hence my May weight loss target of 6.5 pounds). This is an achievable target, but likely to be challenging for me because I've been losing weight slowly and seeing a lot of bouncing around on the scale. I also tend to be fairly hungry when I'm eating under 1500 to 1600 calories, so I'll probably need to add more exercise to compensate. However, I feel like I need something to motivate me for the longer term, and this is what I'm picking. I'll be tracking progress and I can make adjustments as time goes on if I need to.
By the way, I actually decided to resurrect this idea 2 or 3 weeks ago, but kept putting it off for one reason or another. Writing this blog is my way of forcing the commitment -- now it's out there and I have other people to report progress to.
So, any of you Sparkers out there want to join me in losing your years in weight by your next birthday, assuming that's a reasonable goal given how much you have to lose and how much time there is between now and your next birthday?
