Last Day At Mom's :(

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Woke up on my last day at Mom's to another dark, cool, windy day. It had rained all night and we got 33 mm (1.3 inches). So I hopped on the elliptical and did 60 min and Mom went to her water aerobics class at the YWCA. Then Angus wanted to go to Costco to get his vitamins and calcium at 10 am so he and I went as Mom was still away. Bought a little more then I intended, a couple of impulse buys, and didn't get the item I wanted lol. Aged cheddar is a real rare treat for me, so when I saw Balderson's was $4 off, just couldn't let that one go by.
Mom had narrowed it down to three motels she wanted to stay at while in Radium Hot Springs and I managed to find a web site with more information on all three. Most featured a fridge of some kind and a coffee maker in the rooms. Unfortunately, the prices are given at high season for the time we are going to be there, making all the choices over $100 a night, and even more on weekends.
Finally, at long last, the sun made an appearance late in the afternoon. Mom and I went outside for a while. Angus was raking up the clumps of cut grass he had left the other day. The grass has grown so thick and is so soggy, the lawn mowers kept getting bogged down, but if they hadn't gotten at it, their mowers wouldn't have been able to cut it at all (his neighbor came out to help him when he saw he was struggling with it and brought his on mower but had no better luck.. The ticks are going to be really bad this year. After our hike Saturday, I found two crawling on me later. When Angus was having supper, I spotted one on his ponytail. We never used to get them in their yard. Mom is so not looking forward to getting her garden work done under those trees. But as usual, all her soil is gone and she must dig in new stuff to keep the perrenials alive, those that survived out winter without any moisture. She may have at least two dead shrubs, but one is still under warrantee so she will be able to get a free replacement. She has very bad, hard clay soil and does hours and hours and long days in the spring simply digging in new earth to keep her huge yard growing.
The evening was going to be gorgeous, but as always, Mom hustles me home before dark because she doesn't think Angus should be driving then, so no last beaver walk -they only come out just before dark which is later now at about 7:30 pm..
Busy, busy as usual. Club work I didn't get done and needs to be done tomorrow.
Came home, unpacked everything, had supper, washed the dishes and hit the computer.
Night all, have a Terrific Tuesday!
Hugs,
Linda

Angus has a pony-tail? Somehow I wasn't picturing him with long hair. I can only imagine all the work your mom's yard takes to look like it does. Even with great soil it would take time to look as good as it does.

When does your spring show up? I remember waking up one morning in North Bay after spring had pretty much settled in. I was on my way to teach a class at the Y and had waited longer to leave than normal. When I went to push the door open, it didn't open right. Turned out I was pushing against a 6 foot drift of new snow in the carport!!!! But I'm hoping for the day you get a nice warm, bright, sunny day to wallow in. :)

We found some ticks on us in our woods hike last week. That is one thing I hate about hiking in the woods! emoticon
Glad you had a nice visit with your Mom! That will be so nice for you two to go on your trip to Radium Springs!! Wish I could go on a vacation-we haven't had an out of state one in a few years! But, Florida has a way of making you feel like you are on vacation just about everyday! We even went to the ocean today! Saw an otter playing in the water around the pier where the people were fishing. That was a first!!
Enjoy your Wednesday!! Hope the break-in's at your apartments have stopped! We have been notified that our area has been experiencing lots of break ins here too. Stay safe. emoticon

Wish there was something your mom could do to aerate her soil. But with all the gardening she does, I'm sure she's aware of all the options. It's amazing the beautiful gardens she succeeds in growing in that type of soil!

Ticks! emoticon I'm always concerned because I'm afraid of Lyme disease. I haven't treated my cat yet this Spring, so thanks for the reminder.

Sorry you couldn't get a last evening walk in before going home. emoticon

Linda, I know you're going to miss your mom! I envy you that your mom and you are like friends, but I do love my mom, just the same.

I hope you have an easy time now, back at your smoky apartment! emoticon

Just found a tick crawling on my after my a.m. walk. Probably will find more later. Our yard is pretty good since the grass is short, but as soon as we get where the deer roam or into the taller grass (even 6") it's alive with ticks.

On a more positive note I saw one of the biggest garter snakes I've ever seen on my walk this morning. My DD found a medium sized one last year that had a scar on it's body making it easily identifiable. She caught it a few times last year and this spring, we found it sunning itself by it's usual spot. Wished they ate ticks. emoticon

Had to detour on my walk a bit today because I came across a duck sitting on 7 eggs the other day and didn't want to chance disturbing her.

Glad you enjoyed your time at your mom's. Enjoy that cheddar, it's one of my favourites too. Have a great day, CJ
