Question: Weight Watchers vs. Sparkpeople

Monday, May 07, 2012

What is the real difference between the two? I have always wanted to try weigh watchers but when I found Sparkpeople I thought that I didn't need it. Is there something different between the two sites?

I have participated with WW a few times and I've just joined Sparkpeople and already I feel like I'm getting a lot of information to succeed and without the cost!

For me ww was the way go years ago when it was the exchange program. I have lost no more than 3 lbs on the ww point system. Each individual is different. Eating a certain number of exchanges each day works better for me. This week I'm doing the exchange program and also calculating the number of calories. Ww costs money. Doesn't make sense to spend $42 a month with no weight loss. With spark you can communicate with those who have something in common. SP website is easy to manage and it's free!

I do both. I hate counting calories so I signed up for Weight Watchers online and I use their tracking system. I use spark to for the accountability and community aspect. I've found I lost more weight on weight watchers simply because it's something I have to pay for and I hate wasting money.

I agree with GURNXTDOOR04 - I did find that WW's mobile stuff worked better on my Android.

The tracking methods are different. Sparkpeople you count every calorie, WW you are allowed to eat unlimited fruits and vegetables. They have this set formula that changes how much you can eat. Sparkpeople of course is free and takes less of a time commitment if you compare it to the in person weigh-ins. Depending on which group you get, Sparkpeople is easier to connect to people that are like you, have the same interests, and are trying to lose as much as you are. The only problem I found with weightwatchers is that I was younger than most people attending so while they were talking about kids, and packing lunches, and full-time careers while I was trying to figure out WW on dorm food yet Sparkpeople if I want to find a group about college students I can. They are both great programs but I feel Sparkpeople offers you everything that WW online does without the cost.

I have done WW several times and the only differences I can see is you don't go to actual classes and there is no actual weigh in with a "counselor". SP is great, you can still log your food, post on blogs and get encouragement from others in the SP community.
