Restaurants Trying to Appeal to Us

Monday, May 07, 2012

Lately you may have noticed some of the ads on SparkPeople are from places you wouldn't expect a health-oriented site to want as sponsors. Places like Cheesecake Factory and Dunkin Donuts. I was actually a little angry when I started seeing Cheesecake Factory ads, because all I could see in my mind were their huge entrees and mountainous cheesecake portions. Then I picked up this month's issue of Cooking Light and read an article on how restaurants are changing...including Cheesecake Factory of all places! I was prompted to do some web surfing to find out if it was true, and came to http://www.thecheesecakefactor
y.com/chefsCornerLanding/c
hefscornerLanding. Excitement! Now I don't have to dread when friends want to go to CF, where they will indulge, while I'm stuck with a plate of steamed veggies or "a nice salad with dressing on the side." I can plan for success ahead of time.

And CF isn't the only place offering healthier options. Dunkin Donuts has unveiled its DDSmart program. Now, when I'm traveling, instead of getting a fatty breakfast sandwich on the run, if there's a DD, I can get one of their egg white wake-up wraps (with either turkey sausage or veggies) for 150 calories and way less cholesterol than I normally get from the usual 2 boiled eggs I eat most mornings.

So happy more restaurants are jumping on the healthy bandwagon so I don't have to break out in a cold sweat anytime someone suggests we go out to eat.

Me too!!!!! I've been pleasantly surprised at some of the light options at some of my favorite places. Two new favorites are Bonefish and surprisingly, Austin Grill! Lovely grilled fish or chicken with fruit salsa and steamed veggies, etc. etc. etc. I always steer eating out to a place where there is a nice selection of healthy options. Nice to be able to plan ahead. (Jeez!! Who wrote that???? Way weird after being all about the wing night!)

I guess the trick is actually sticking to the healthy options when you go out and not getting swept up in the moment and going for the usual.

Dunkin has had the DDSmart for quite a while. My favorite thing to order there though is the reduced fat blueberry muffin. The egg white sandwiches just don't appeal to me for some reason. Fortunately we don't have a CF near us. I did see something from Outback on SparkPeople a couple of days ago and I wasn't impressed with their offerings. It seemed that a lot of the message was "Take half of it home".

Thanks for sharing. I guess we really do have to stop making assumptions and start doing the research to see. CJ

Hallelujah! It's about time :) Hopefully people who aren't "trying" to be healthier will make smarter decisions as this keeps occurring and we can get the obesity rate down!!! So glad restaurants are listening to a big chunk of their consumer base AND doing their part to help everyone be healthier!!

I have been to CF a couple of times in the last six months and have indulged off of their Skinnylicious menu. It is good to see them offering more alternatives for those of us trying to "lose ourselves". Now if they could only get their cheesecake offerings down to 150 calories or less a serving! emoticon emoticon

Didn't know about DD, but that's really good to know! Thanks for the info Celia.

We had an office lunch at CF last week. I had delicious roasted artichoke, and a beet/arugula/goat cheese salad. And, I was so full that there was no room for any cheesecake (and I had to bring half of the artichoke home to finish later).

I've never been to CF (just as well!), but HAVE enjoyed DD's turkey sausage & egg white sandwiches -- they're pretty darn good, and far more satisfying than a donut! I'd still rather have fresh, whole foods at home, but at least we're beginning to see more options when we have to eat out. emoticon
