Today was the Greater Binghamton Bridge Run Half Marathon and 5K. I did the half, my second. I was absolutely perfect weather for a race. At 7:30 this morning it was about 50* and sunny, warming up to about 60* by the time we finished. I have to admit, getting up at 5:30 on a Sunday was a little rough, but it was worth it. LadyGwen picked me up about 6:45 and we rode down to the stadium together. Saw some people, including our friend Jess and hit the bathrooms. Lined up with about 5 minutes to spare, took some pics and warmed-up. We started on the slow side, about 9:30m/m for the first 2 miles and then I picked up the pace a bit. I did 9 m/m for the next 2 and then averaged 8:30 for the rest of the race. I had some fuel around mile 9 and then ran my 4 fastest miles of the race. I did mile 13 in under 8 minutes and reeled in a bunch of people. I finished strong and felt really good. My net time was 1:54:50, just about 4 minutes slower than last year but still under 2 hours and my goal of 1:55!
There were some great spectators along the route. Lots of signs...one of my favorites said "Worst Parade Ever!", a family with instruments playing the Rocky theme, free high fives from a group of elementary school kids, a few friends that cheered me on and my daughter and her babysitter near mile 11. One of our goodie bag items was a cowbell. Best Idea Ever! It was so cool to come into the finish with dozens of cowbells ringing.
Really a very well done race. A pretty smooth course, lots of support, a cool medal...what more could you ask for?
After some snacks and visiting with many friends, it was time to come home, eat, go to soccer practice and then rest. I had choir tonight and now I'm off to bed for work in the morning. Make tomorrow great!
