I have been running for about 2 years. I started running when I was 45 yrs old. I had read an article about someone who had started in their 40's and I figured if they could do it, so could I. I had just had major surgery and decided that I needed to do something that would help me sustain my weight loss. Sure enough, running is one of the best tools I have ever discovered to help with maintenance. Whenever I see the scale start to creep up, I kick up my heels and slowly see the weight start to come back off.
For me, the weight has always come off pretty slowly. I first started running in January, can you believe it? It was a mild January so I was lucky enough to be able to do it all outside. I used the couch to 5k program, found a great podcast that walked you through it and proceeded to complete the program pretty much on schedule which lead me to sign up for my first 5k. My first 5k I walked with my husband. I wanted to see how far it actually was and if I could do it and what the 5k experience was all about. We finished it in about 45 mins.
This gave me the courage to really sign up and run a 5k. One drawback for me was that I had not invested in the correct pair of shoes and by this time I was logging 15 miles a week ( and my knees and feet were killing me!). I had read about running shoes but thought the cost was too expensive. I then read one of Couch Nicole's blogs about the importance of the correct shoes and how they make all the difference. I went to the running store near my home and tried out several different shoes. I had a gate check and a running analysis ( free at the store). My husband bought my first pair of running shoes for me (for Mother's Day) for that first race. They made all the difference and have served me well over many 5ks and many miles.
Fast forward to three years later and the anniversary of my first 5k. I will be running the same race again next Saturday. I have much more experience now than I did then. I am also running it with my girls. It will be a fun family experience and a nice Mother's Day gift to me. After 3 years it is time to retire my first pair of shoes and get new ones. I know what I like so why tamper with what works? The shoes I prefer are the Nike Zoom Vomero's since I am basically an outdoor runner. Another piece of advice I received was not to worry too much about what your shoes look like since they will just get dirty and stained anyway ( especially when running outdoors). That was great advice. Today, I took the plunge and bought a new pair of shoes. Guess what, I found the $130 shoes I love so much for $48 off of Amazon! The only reason they were so cheap I could see was the color and the model is a few years old. They are a plum and silver color, which I am fine with but it must not be too popular, thus the extremely discounted price. Score and a big win for me!
I am really looking forward to this Mother's Day weekend, the anniversary of my 2 yrs of running and my first 5k. It hasn't always been easy, and I have fallen off the wagon ( and most recently too) but I have rediscovered my love of running.
