Goals for habit formation

Friday, May 04, 2012

Here is my plan for strength training. Very important at my age, not just for weight control. My mom got to the point where she could not even hold a tea pot.

Okay, so I am doing the Coach Nicole exercise band routine. I wash my hair every morning, and while waiting for it to dry, I do the routine. By pairing it with a habit I already have, it has been one of my more successful attempts. I fail when I have a huge amount of things to do, and do them instead of the exercise. Really a stupid attitude, I mean what is 20 minutes? Do I really have to feel so pressured?

Here is what I noticed about starting a new routine. At first, I only did 1/4 of her routine, then the next day 1/2, the next 3/4, and finally the whole thing. I found some of the exercises really irritated me, I did not like them, so I just did half. But by doing them every single day, even if I only did half, I established the habit of doing them (while my hair dried)

Here is what else I noticed: at first I did them poorly, and did not even realize it. Then as I repeated her every day, I would hear her saying new things, even though it is the same tape, but I had not heard them the day before. I found I would add things like sitting properly and breathing properly, so it is always new.

My plan is this: once it gets really simple and fast, and I know everything she is going to say, then I will move on to a new tape. The exercise bands are rather amazing because you can create more work just by changing where you step on the band. Unlike free weights. I really like these better than weights. Highly recommend them.

Sounds like a very good idea to me! Well done!
I will try that! I have not used my bands much lately and it will make a change from free weights. Coach Nicole is great! Like your Mother, I have problems with my hands. Even though I do a lot of gardening, my hands are weak. I have a peripheral neuropathy! I use a stress ball every day and squeeze that, it helps a bit. I have no problem with free weights and exercise bands, its the little finger muscles and hand muscles that are the problem!

Sounds like you are getting into the groove. You plan is good, if you are consistent.
