An unexpected windfall -- maybe?

Thursday, May 03, 2012

When I filed my taxes I asked for direct deposit. The check came to my mailbox today. (So much for direct deposit). I should correct that -- the CHECKS came to my box. Two of them. From the IRS. Tot he best of my knowledge, I'm only supposed to get one. I'm wondering -- is this a mistake? (The government, make a mistake? Naah, that couldn't happen!).

If this turns out to be right, then I've come into $1,200 I wasn't counting on. But I need to call the IRS tomorrow to find out if it's correct. Don't need the Feds at my door, now do I?

But oooh, I hope it's real!

Good idea to check this out before you spend. If it is correct, maybe you can pay down some debt, splurge a little, and save a little for the future?

    I really admire your integrity.

A lot of people would cash the two checks figuring that if the system made a mistake, then the chances of it being found are next to nothing (i.e."let sleeping IRS agents lie"!).

I hope if I'm every faced with a similar situation, that my actions are as ethical as yours.

Keeping my fingers crossed, too, that you get to keep both checks,

Please call the IRS before you cash the checks. If it's a mistake they will want it back (with interest, if you've cashed it).

But I hope it works out and you get to keep the money.

I've found in years past that if the IRS corrects my refund amount from what I worked it out to be (for better or worse), they don't do the direct deposit because they're going to mail me the statement of what the revisions are.

*crossing fingers you really have that windfall and can splurge a little on you and a little on a charity of your choice*

Without knowing how things work where you are, I would assume that they are right. After all, Annie Lennox sang that song "Who are we to disagree" ....and she is ALWAYS right :-)

OOOOOH!!!!! I hope it is REAL, too. Maybe they refigured your taxes and discovered for some reason or other than you were due more of a refund than what you expected. That could be the reason for the checks being mailed to you rather than being direct deposited. The IRS is not known for making errors such as that, so let's hope and pray that this is all on the 'up and up!' It could not happen to one who is more deserving than you.

Was it you that had a refund that had been lost or was it someone else? Either way I hope it is correct:-)
