Trying to "get over" the "you don't leave the table until your plate is clean"

Thursday, May 03, 2012

I am working on "retraining" myself... I don't have to eat every piece of food on my gigantic plate..... even though i still hear my mother's voice saying "You know there are starving people in other countries!! You should not ever waste your food!! Clean your plate" So here is some food for thought..lol.. no pun intended..
1. Use a small plate
2. Pack on a ton of food on a teeny plate
3. Put a lot less food on the big plate
3. Make sure most is veggies
4. Eat 1/2 put the rest in the fridge

Biggest thing for me is I have got to get up from the table! As soon as I am done eating...GET UP GET UP GET UP!! That should not include eating the rest of the kids food (because if i threw it away it would be "wasting".. ugh...thanks mom..lol) or sit there and get 2nds and 3rds...purely because I am still sitting there..

I think I might develop a sign for the fridge that says "Stop a minute Stupid!!! You just ate.. are you really hungry??? Drink a full glass of water... maybe some gum.. then go OUTSIDE !! ABSORB THE SUN.. WALK WITH THE KIDS.. THEN come back at supper time"

So goal for now is to GET UP !!

This is a hard one to unlearn. In my house, if you didn't eat everything on your plate there would be physical repercussions. Eat the food or get the belt. And woe was me the day when they said "there are starving children in __________" and I told them to send the food there! emoticon

It IS possible to relearn new habits though. I use the smaller-plate system, and when we go out, I'm now telling the server to serve half now and bundle the other half to go. If I don't see the rest, I don't miss it. This works out well, especially because hubby loves to eat the leftovers. emoticon

I'm needing to retrain myself too. I liked the SP pictures today about why we eat. I have heard many people talk about putting half the plate away.... I have NEVER done that but maybe I am ready. I have never liked leftovers so it will take me two steps... learning to put the food away for later and then actually choosing that food later. Thanks for adding me as a friend.

Years ago when I was in Weight Watchers the leader noted that "you wouldn't eat out of the trash" which is essentially what you would be doing if you ate off anothers plate to clean it.

    My motto is:
You don't have to eat the whole thing.

This little chart also helps me a lot.

You have not given up on yourself. You now know you are the only one that can make it happen for you.

You have the power to succeed or fail.

You have chosen to succeed.

Few baby steps complete a long journey

Writing is progress!!!
