Ok, this eating more carbs is so not my style but I am doing it for my half since I want to do the best that I can and give my body every opportunity that I can to do that.
I just read an article on carb loading before races and for those doing a MARATHON, it was studied that those runners who ate almost 7 grams of carbs per kg of weight ran faster then those who did not. OMG!!! So I am doing a half so I should be able to cut that requirement in half so for me that would be almost 350 grams of carbs in one day, or 1400 calories from carbs. They did say that normally they suggest eating your carbs but the day before a race it is ok to drink them by using some sports drinks. The one thing that was mentioned it that just one day of carb increase is enough to make a difference. I think I will be eating all day, ugh!!!!
So I am planning out now what to eat a day or two before the half.
Breakfast – big bowl of steel cut oats and a banana
Am snack – Lara bar with coconut water
Lunch – 2 sweet potatoes turned into oven fries with chicken and broccoli
PM snack – Fruit salad with pineapples, mangoes and strawberries with maybe a gatorade
Dinner – Hopefully a burrito bowl with black beans and some rice
Bedtime snack – this will be my real treat – cold stone creamery ice cream but an "I like it" size with raspberries and dark chocolate shavings.
I have no idea how many carbs this is but I will check but man it should be enough.
Breakfast the day of the race will be something that I have been eating before every long race and that is my Paleo banana pancakes and wash it down with a Bare Naked fruit drink.
Post race – protein shake made with pineapple and strawberries and maybe a banana and coconut water.
I still will need to figure out what to eat the couple of days afterward to make sure that I eat for recovery.
After that, back to lower carb for me since I will be changing my workout routine and do not need as much reserved energy so my body can start using the fat reserves it seems to desperately wanting to hold on to :(
