So I cut my hours at work to lose weight

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Originally I put in my two weeks notice to quit my job and then they convinced me stay on part time so they wouldn't lose a top performer.

Just a back story on my job:

I work for a student loan company as a collection specialist. My job entails searching for people whose addresses/phone numbers have changed. I call references and try to collect on a debt that was not paid...if they are unable to pay I try to convince them to get on deferment plans that can help them if they are going through financial difficulties. I try to reach out to people before their student loans charge off and if you reading this and you have a student loan, never let it go after being 360 days of being pass due. The government has every right to start garnishing wages and taking your income tax money. Student loans are federal unless its a private loan. ANYWAY....getting off track here....my job is highly stressful and I deal with a lot of people that are irate and some who have some of the saddest stories and it really weighs on me mentally and physically.

I eat when I am stressed out and this job definitely feeds the need to eat. They are constantly trying to supplement the cons of this job with buying us food...pizza day, pasta day, hamburger day, candy all the time, and gift cards to restaurants....its crazy! At first I thought it was great...then I gained 30lbs....all the weight I lost from sparkpeople last year. emoticon

Not to mention I work 50+ hours a week and when I come home, I am so mentally exhausted from working, I don't run anymore. I used to run 4-5 times a week 2-3 miles each time. I shed 30lbs off my body in just three months! Then I started a full-time job because my husband I really needed the money for our wedding/bills. But Now we are in the position where I can work PT. I was going to look else where for work, possibly something that allows me to move around...but my job asked me to stay on PT which they NEVER offer...its actually going to be a trial period for the company and myself. They typically don't allow PT because the job is a high stress environment and they fear everyone would want to switch to PT. I've already had a couple of co-workers ask me how they can do it.

I feel thankful that my job will still allow me to stay and actually I am happy that I dont have to look for another PT job. But what really convinced me to stay is the hours. I will be working in the evenings 4:30-9pm which allows me to focus on myself all day. I can run, garden, sparkpeople, and help my husband with his business.

Granted, not everyone can cut their hours at work like I am able to, but I know myself and I need to dedicate a certain amount of time to myself a day. I did this last year while working PT and I never felt better.

Later I am going to post pics of myself. Before pictures like I did last year as well as measurements.

That's great that you are able to be part-time. I wish I could do the same. Stay focused on yourself and you'll see those extra pounds gone in no time!!

I remember reading about a study a number of years ago that showed 1/2 time employees produced 75% of what full time employees. Or said another way the PT employees did as much in 4 hrs as full time empoyees did in 6 hrs.
If more employers realized this, they would probably be more open to PT employees.

I wish I could! I hope you get back into your exercises. Work stress sucks - and sucks the life out of you. I hope things pick up :) Office treats are difficult to fight against too. You can do it!

I completely understand. I work a highly stressful job as well and hear countless stories of people losing their homes and often their lives due to illness. It's very sad so I understand the need to cut your hours. I think this well be a great thing for you and I wish you the very best with focusing on losing weight!

That's wonderful that you are able to switch to part-time. I'm sure that being a collection agent is stressful. I hope this works out in your favor!
