I Failed

Saturday, April 28, 2012

And I'm ok with that. I am detoxing from Dr Pepper this weekend. I was trying to go completely cold turkey but my foul mood and headache forced me to give in. I did, however, opt for the Dr Pepper 10 instead of regular Dr Pepper. This stuff is so nasty, which means I won't drink it quickly, if I even finish it. I hate Aspartame. Ugh. This is why i don't drink diet drinks. So, tomorrow should be a better day. I am investing my normal Dr Pepper money per paycheck to buy a tea maker and some tea.

Oh, no Dr Pepper today has me really bummed out. I'm exhausted, and almost depressive. I'm hoping this will pass quickly. I will be getting up later to do some exercise. I have to stay up late tonight, so this will help me. Tuesday, I go back to the overnight shift and have to try to train myself over the weekend to do this. Bleh.

Urgh when I decided to get off caffeine it was the worst! I couldn't cope withe the headaches from withdrawing but I persevered. Now I try and stick to de-caf tea (which is so grim I don't usually bother). I used to suffer from daily headaches and heart palpitations which is why I wanted to get off the caffeine, you just need to work out why you are giving up the Dr P and have that at the forefront of your mind.

One of the best things I heard about caffeine which keeps me motivated is that: it might give you energy in the short term but you are stealing energy from yourself later. It doesn't create new energy it just moves it. So you end up more tired.

You haven't failed! You only had one drink compared to the 2 litres you usually have!

I expected the headaches, and the mood. But I was trying to plow through it. I can easily go through a litre to 2 litres of Dr Pepper a day. So I had my husband get me the Dr Pepper 10. Any time I try to "ween" myself, I end up right back drinking it. It's my only vice, and I am literally that addicted to it. Some people will argue that it's the caffeine or the sugar....but I can't turn around and drink coffee or tea and be ok. It is literally the Dr Pepper. Or maybe that's what my mind thinks it is.......

As for the overnight shift, I actually like it better. I am able to get more sleep, because my husband will take care of the kids so I don't have to get up. If they wake in the middle of the night, I always get up with them because I always wake up. Then I have a hard time getting to sleep.

You mentioned a headache - did you know that caffeine withdrawal will cause that? If you've been drinking a lot of Dr. P throughout the day, would it be easier to just wean yourself instead of going cold turkey?

Plus, you have my sympathies for having to work the overnight shift. I did that for 5 years and it really takes a toll on you physically and mentally. Humans are meant to be asleep when it's dark out, and it's tough to go against that.

If you decide to buy some packaged teas, I recommend Bigelow brand. Their Chinese oolong tea is smooth and delicious, and their herbal fruit teas are great hot or iced.

Good luck! emoticon
