My Favorite Workout Buddy

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Thursday, April 26, 2012

If you’ve followed any of my v/blogs, you already know my favorite workout buddy is my daughter, Audrey. We are each other’s biggest fan. This morning, when I hit the elliptical, I glanced over at my stack of blank post-it notes and saw this--

Looks like she’s made some post-its for the next couple of days. She’s part of why my streak keeps going.

Audrey is largely responsible for turning me on to hooping too. A couple of years ago, we stumbled onto a YouTube video. It was, “Why You Should Buy Your Girlfriend a Real Hula Hoop” or something like that. I dunno. Anyway, it was the first time we ever saw someone hoopdancing and we thought it was the coolest thing. I secretly wondered if I could ever do something like that. Me. A short, round, middle-aged chick, whose concept of grace is religious and not at all related to poise. Then, I stumbled onto a hooping book with a short DVD at, of all places, the grocery store. Shortly afterwards, hubs ordered my first hoop (heavy, Sweet Nellie-she who hoops around the block) and I started. But I didn’t get very far, strictly waist hooping. I couldn’t come close to doing any of the tricks on the DVD. I had no idea my hoop was too heavy.

Audrey, on the other hand, was still hooping with a kids’ size hoop and she picked up the tricks right away. She tried so hard to help me learn. She kept encouraging me and showing me. Finally, I told her that this was going to have to be her thing and not mine, but that I loved how she was awesome at it. We worked up a routine for her 4th Grade Talent Show (she’s in the 6th grade now). She was going to hoop. We knew what people would expect--oh great, another hula hooper. There’s always a kid who hoops in the talent show, usually waist hooping, sometimes neck or kneeling, sometimes with two. But we’d never seen anybody do this kind of hooping. We planned on her dropping her hoop at the beginning, to make it look like she wasn’t going to do so well. Then, she was going to launch into this fierce hooping and surprise everyone. I wish you could’ve been there. It worked just as we planned. You could hear the collective sigh in the room, as she came onstage and again as she dropped her hoop. Then, there was a gasp and people seemed to wake up and sit up straighter, as she hooped like a maniac. A dad next to me was saying, “Oh my gosh, she’s good!” He didn’t know I was her mom. It was the coolest thing ever.

After that night, Audrey kept encouraging me to keep trying, saying how much fun it would be to do this together. Finally, I ordered a lighter hoop, practiced and practiced and-- sha-BAM--became a hooper. Not a graceful, poised, elegant hooper, like the ones in the videos. But that’s okay. That was never my real intention. I wanted to do it because it looked like fun, it might help me lose weight and it was something I could do with my daughter. She’s 13 now and going to Junior High next year. I don’t know how much longer she’ll want to be in these crazy vlogs. She tells me, “Forever” and I hope that’s true, but, well--you know. I’m just exceptionally grateful for every crazy hoop memory we’ve made. Working out can be fun, especially if you share it with someone special.

And check it out-- I dug around and found some shaky video I took with my cellphone at the talent show that night. That’s my daughter!!!!!

Wow, that was some mad hoop moves!!! Congrats on an awesome performance even though that was 2 yrs ago.. I'm impressed!

I have bad talent show memories. As a teacher I participated and did the magic rings that interlock and come apart and told a story while i did it very fast and professionally I am pretty sure.. I was laughed and booed, even though I was really good and all I can think is because 1) some kids found the rings and saw there was a cut in them - and told others, as I hosted the green room and they were in my office, and 2) I was fat so they laughed at me. I don't know why really, but I cried for hours after, totally humiliated. I was really mostly pissed that the principal nor any other teacher stopped the behavior nor any of the parents, since this was a nighttime event and parents were there.

She is really good! Makes it look so easy, lol. I used to love to hula hoop when I was younger always won in my play day events. Maybe I should dust off a good hoop and give it a spin! ;-) My oldest daughter is in 5th grade getting ready to go in 6th. Wouldn't it be great if we could keep them little and close to us forever :-) Time sure flies! Thank you for sharing, tell her I think she is just FANTASTIC and to keep it up!!

Have a great night!

Audrey was super in the show! Shelli, you are hooping at whatever your age is (not prying) and perhaps she will continue to hoop as her means of exercise throughout her life. I am glad that the two of you do this together and that you aren't afraid to be goofy. Life is so much more fun when we aren't worried about others seeing us acting goofy.

I sure wish I had someone in my neighborhood that would exercise with me.

What an awesome tribute to your daughter and such a great story you both share. I agree that working out can be fun and it is the most fun when you can share it with someone else. This has probably helped you bond even more with your daughter which in my eyes is priceless.

Keep on hooping!!!

P.S. My daughter is 8 and we share a very special bond as well. Always doing things together. Wouldn't that be something to join her in gymnastics! Ok... that may be going too far! LOL......

Your relationship with your daughter reminds me so much of my relationship with mine. My daughter is 18, and we are closer than ever. She still tells me when she gets older, gets married and has kids that she wants to live right next door to me! As Audrey gets older, you'll have your "moments that you'd rather forget", and there may be a year or so where her friends, boyfriends and everything else seems more important than you do, and you might even get a little jealous during that time.. but wait it out.. You will be the one she comes running to when the toughest teenage years hit.. (and yes, they are ahead).. it's those times that will bring you two even closer than you are now.. I know this from experience. Daughters are such a blessing and I thank God every day for mine, as I'm sure you do for Audrey!
BTW.. she was awesome in that video! Way to go Audrey!!

Ten years old and she wowed the crowd!! What I really noticed is YOUR sounds behind that phone, Mom.. you were really excited for her, I can tell..
She is blessed to have you as a mother, and vice-versa.

I think she will own her own company someday..
BTW, how are the little piggies doing now? Still quarantined?

You are so blessed to have Audrey! She takes time for you. Of course she will be your friend as she gets older; she had a great foundation. Being friends, as well as mother/daughter is the best. My mom was my best friend.

And yes, she will continue to hoop with you. Look at the 'fame' she would be turning down. Your vlogs are always voted best of the day. LOL. Teens love being famous. Later, she'll just have to open her own Spark account.

Thanks for sharing. I wish my daughter would take an interest in hooping.

You two are very lucky to have this type of relationship. You will be best friends forever.
Love the showmanship in the both of you and the decision to drop the hoop and then wow them. Audrey looked amazing with that hoop. Now only did she look like a professional hooper but the confidence she had to get up there alone and drop the hoop, shrug it off and then perform like a superstar is very impressive!

I hope you two continue to produce the fun vlogs you do because I am now addicted.

Audrey is one of my favorite people in the whole world. Definitely in the top 10 (but not 1 - 5 because, you know, family take those spots). She's "real" and oh so patient with the kids. Not to disparage any of our other sitters, but if she was older she would be our sole choice. I can't wait to see what the future holds for her...and if she needs any help with math - well, you know where I live.

Oh darn you... you made me all weepy with joy and GRACE, LOL!!!

...and about that grace... one of the things I enjoy so much is that you ARE graceful! I love that your movement seems to simply flow, and I see the rhythm in your body regardless of what you are doing with the hoop... even when you are just learning something new.

Thanks for sharing... your Audrey IS AWESOME!!!

(and I pray my relationship with my daughter as she grows is even half of your with Audrey)
