Sometimes the universe gives you a sign

I have been doing a lot of baking. All kinds of baking. Grew my own sourdough starter and baked my first loaves of bread last night. Started working on my brownie recipe for my business I dream of opening. Well to avoid eating all of said brownies I have been giving them away to a friend who took them to work. The first was a chocolate brownie with toasted hazelnuts. Yes, it was as good as it sounds. One of his employees tried to steal it they said it was so good. He told me he had to defend it because people went so crazy for it. Then I made a chocolate brownie and put pockets of all natural peanut butter in the middle. They were quite heavy and let me tell you. Even better than the hazelnut version. Once I went to natural peanut butter I never went back and there was something about the sweetness of the brownie that played off the earthiness of the unsweetened peanut butter that just really worked. I have also been experimenting with cooking with raw cane sugar to make it less horrible for you, if that is possible emoticon. It made the brownies have this dense chewiness that I really like.
I was doing all of this for fun figuring I would blog about it but then he called me today and told me that again he had to defend his brownie, which was enormous, and that one of his coworkers asked if he could place an order!!!! You do not get more of a sign from the cosmos than that. ASHLEY SELL YOUR FLIPPIN BROWNIES. No more self sabotage and fear of failure. One thing I have learned being unemployed is that I want to be self employed. I hate being a 9-5 person. This can work. People with much less talent and knowledge make it work. I can't let fear stop me. I moved to Boston alone to start a new life and I didn't let fear stop me. I can make a dessert company work!

If I lived there I would SO buy your brownies. You know, I was actually JUST telling my boyfriend the other night there should be more dessert cafes. So often we want to go out for dessert and all there is is ice cream shops. Which is great, don't get me wrong, but a little restaurant just for cakes, pies, cookies, and other goodies would be amazing. You could call it "Getting Your Just Desserts." I want some credit for the name though. Name your deadliest chocolate dessert ChrissyCake. :)

have you checked out it's a place for artists/crafters to sell their wares. i know there are some cookie sellers on there. Not sure it would work for your full business, but it might a good place to test market some things :)

DO IT! Start have what you need. Oven, ingredients and one customer! Hint: Don't eat all the inventory and when you taste test, spit it out! (Don't sell that part!) Okay, it is obvious time to go home--and work out!

You could also sell cards that say how to burn off the calories....or maybe not ; )

Go Big! Cake Boss ain't got nuttin' on you! Hey, isn't he in Boston? Sell them to won't even need a store....maybe they'll put you on TV and you can do a Spin Off! Brownie Boss. Brownie Queen. Brownie Bust! BrownieSize 2 Good 2 Pass By, Brownielicious! Or even just Browns. Okay, now I've just gone bonkers! Remember me when you make your first million!

I think a "brownie truck" would be so epic people would come to your town specifically for the novelty. You could establish yourself in the business districts during lunch hours and then do festivals or farmers markets on the weekend for a few hours to build your business then switch over to a brick and mortar store. I've seen it work a quite a few times in my neck o' the woods!

Thanks everyone! I do have to make them affordable and have mass market appeal so i am going to have a standard line and then maybe a line that is raw sugar etc that is a bit more expensive so there are options for everyone. I might also experiment with some vegan options after I get all of the standard stuff figured out.

In Boston, I would guess there are a lot of little coffee shops, etc. Could you start selling your baked good there?? One of those last minute thoughts as they pick up a coffee? I think you may have found the answer to your job issues, as well as your happiness!

That's awesome! And don't worry about what's healthy and what's not - use this to get started and also offer healthy desserts. Get baking and get started on a menu and price list! (Forget helping your "friends" develop theirs!) And your food blog could be great marketing! ;)

Ashley, if you need any help finding resources for marketing, accounting, or anything along those lines, please let me know. I started a business a couple of years ago, and, while I'm not getting rich, I am a much happier person than when I was working in jobs that I was way over-qualified for and bored to death doing. The hazards of a fluctuating income have been nothing for me compared to the hazards of office politics :)

In Chattanooga, where I live, there are several organizations that exist solely to help entrepreneurs develop their ideas successfully. Somehow I feel certain that Boston would have such things as well. We have a "small business incubator" that I believe is funded in part by the SBA that offers very low cost rent to new business owners, there are classes that help people write business plans, and the list goes on and on. I'm sure you will find resources there, too.

Starting a business is terrifying and exhilarating and painfully boring all at the same time. I am here to offer you encouragement anytime.
