Update and Where I Am.......

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

I haven't been active on Sparkpeople the last couple of months. I check in everyday, but I haven't been tracking my food or exercise... I don't know why. I feel so much better, both in mind and body, now that I am six months out from my knee replacement. I haven't given up sugar completely but I am using FAR less and I don't feel that it is affecting me like it used to. I am not a slave to it any longer. My husband and I started following a vegan diet a couple of months ago - and - wait for it - I GAINED 10 and a half pounds!!! Sigh..... Of course he lost about 15..... I continue to work on being more mindful in everything that I do - including food. I tend to let my mind run far ahead of me - so it is an exercise to constantly bring my self back to center. When I find myself with a racing mind - I take a few slow, deep breaths and check in - what do I see, hear, smell, taste and feel in this moment. And then I relax and am back in present time. My initial response to discovering that I gained 10.5 pounds was to PANIC!!!! Again - bringing myself back to center. The other thing that is suprising is that I feel so much better with this vegan diet. My energy and mood is through the roof! I think that I can work on centering myself before I eat - every time. I can be very aware of portion size. I can eat more salad. I probably sound silly (projecting here!). If anyone can see holes in my thinking please point it out. I am open for suggestions and wisdom. I feel confused and rather discouraged. It is hard to make a change - like committing to a vegan diet - and to gain weight. I am spinning a little bit here......

Sounds like you're working hard at the vegan diet. I've been looking at it for a while. I may give it a shot.

That's good about the sugar-I've been trying to slash that too. I have also gained- so discouraging! You are not the first person I've heard say they gained weight on a vegan diet. It's not what you would expect! Some of the blogs and books I have read suggest that there is no one plan that is right for everyone. I'm still looking for the plan that's right for me. Now I'm on 'The 17 Day Diet'. It seems to be helping, but it's slow going, unlike all the hype about losing weight quickly. emoticon
