Saving bucks on healthy groceries. Live class challenge.

Monday, April 23, 2012

So as the title says we are to blog about ways we save on healthy groceries. I have been thinking on this and Bobby and I have made some changes to help our budget.
One thing we attempt to do (but still need to do more often) is plan our meals for the week. That way we have a list of ingredients needed and stick to it.

We also try to hit the reduced racks. There is one in the produce department that has some slightly bruised or marked produce. We just cut away the bad parts and use it.

The meat department will have reduced prices on some things if they are close to their "use by" dates. We will purchase them and then freeze. If we buy large amounts we divide into serving sizes (or make the ground turkey/meats into patties) and freeze. This makes it easy to just pull out what you need and cook.

We do buy generic or store brands on a lot of items. We have learned which products we like just as well or even better in generic. For example Bobby loves the store brand oatmeal better than the name brands.

I think the best way to save is to plan ahead before you even enter the store and to be diligent in looking for the best bargains offered at the time.

Good luck on your next shopping trip Sparkers!

Here's how we save: buy no beverage! Michael Pollan, when asked recently by a reporter what eco-friendly, healthy item would he recommend that could be gotten at a fast food restaurant said: "Tap water!" All we need is water. Spend nothing on all those high-carbon-footprint beverages and you can afford your fresh freggies! :-)

You will often find items in bulk at health food stores. We have been surprised how much less expensive oatmeal and oat bran is at the local health food store. we compare prices per pound and buy in bulk. Dried herbs and spices are almost always a better buy there too. If we are wanting to just try a new spice or herb it is almost always available in the spice drawers you can buy a single serving amount almost.
I know my grocery store I know when the food is delivered and if I want something fresh it is Tuesday and if I want something reduced I go on Monday morning,
I am happy to find others who find it realistic to plan ahead.
I never do coupons, they are mostly for overly processed over priced items we do not want to eat, so we never buy magazines we can get them at the library. So many enjoyable ways to EAT RIGHT. Thanks for the nice blog, it was refreshing . Pat in Maine, emoticon emoticon
