"...Riding around town with all the windows down
Eight-track playing all your favorite sounds
The rhythm of the bongos fill the park
The street musicians trying' to get a start..."
I love summer. I love everything about it. I live for this time of year. For me, there are two seasons: summer, and wait-for-summer. Despite the 42 degree temperature hereabouts today (weird, I know) and the accumulating snow just a couple hours west of me, I'm psyched for the coming of another summer. Are you?
"...Stretched out on a blanket in the sand
Kids of all ages digging Disneyland
Rapping on the C.B. radio in your van
We'll give a big "ten four" to the trucking man..."
A short and non-inclusive list of what I like about summer:
1. Long daylight hours
2. Swimming, at the pool or beach
3. The ocean and everything about it
4. Fun outdoor activities
5. Grilling (this year, only Spark-compliant foods - you know me)
6. The absence of school (Alice Cooper still rings in my head! - at the tender age of 51)
7. The sun (I know its bad for me - still...)
8. The aroma of a freshly mowed lawn
9.; Drinking my morning coffee out on our deck
10. Memories of 8 amazing summers of my youth, spent on the Coast of Maine
And of course, because I am a creature of the commercialization generation, these four, in strict order (cue the music...):
Who does not remember that ad?!?! Whether you remember it or not, if you are at all like me, you will love the update in the following link. Does it not just scream "summer" at the very tops of its lungs?!
This will be the first summer of my Sparky reformation. I figured that someone else nuts about summer would have started and managed a group hereabouts. Guess what? not so much...
"...Young boys playing stick ball in the street
Fire hydrants help to beat the heat
Old man feeding pigeons in the square
Night-time finds young lovers walking there..."
So I am contemplating starting my own Sparky group dedicated to this topic. I'm picturing that members would post distinctly summery, Sparky activities in which they plan to partake, or have partaken. It can be a gathering place of the 225ish of you, or some subset, who have chosen to waste time reading the stuff I post in blogs. When summer is over (and only if I still have not learned all the Calculus needed to stop time dead in its tracks), we'll move on to
"...In Atlantic City or out in Malibu
Or any where between, I'm telling you
When you feel those balmy breezes on your face
Summer time is the best time any place..."
Within the group, we can have an overall weight-loss contest. Say (if we start on Preakness Saturday, a traditional kickoff day around here), summer is about 100 days long until Labor Day. Think each of us (whose goals so state) can lose (say) 20 lbs over that 100-day window? I think if we help and support one another, many of us can achieve this. That means doing the Sparky thing, even around those picnics, cookouts, crab feasts and ballgames. It means being good (calorie and exercise-wise), even when the kids are home, being bad.
So, here's the question --> Who is in? If I set up a Sparkgroup titled "100 Days of Summer 2012 Challenge" by May 1st, with 3 weeks or so to sign up, will you sign up and play? Responses here tell the tale. If I spend summer just doing the regular Sparky thing, so be it, but I think the hand-picked 225ish of you aspire to something more. What say you? Are you in?
"... 'Cause it's summer; Summer time is here
Yes it's summer; My time of year
Yes it's summer' My time of year..."
PS - Congrats to MaryAnn (I call her Ginger!...) who identified the lyrics of "Summer" by the group War, interspersed throughout this blog!
