Dieting While Distracted

Monday, April 23, 2012

I’ve been distracted lately. I’m in the process of buying my first home and that seems to be all I can think about – closing, painting, refinishing floors, packing, moving, unpacking. You get the idea. It’s exciting, but overwhelming. On top of the house distraction, a happy one, is a not-so-happy distraction – INJURY. I’m not sure what I did to my left ankle, but I’ve been in varying amounts of pain/discomfort for over two weeks. So, it’s time to hobble over to the doctor and let him take a look. If I were to diagnose myself, based on knowledge gained from countless episodes of ER and what I’ve learned from WebMd, I’d say the best case scenario is a pulled or torn something or other. The worst case scenario is a stress fracture. I’ll update you after I check with an actual doctor, though.

These distractions mean I haven’t been focusing like I know I should on maintaining this new, healthier lifestyle. You have to THINK about eating healthfully and you have to PLAN to exercise. Those things don’t typically happen on auto-pilot. At least they don’t for me.

I haven’t fallen face first off the wagon, but I’ve gotten lazy about tracking and checking in with my Spark Peeps, both of which I KNOW I need in order to stay with the program. I keep telling myself that I need to FOCUS, but every time I try to focus, I start thinking about paint colors or counter-tops. I’ve come so far, I don’t want to let any of the progress I’ve made slip away.

Right now, I’m not sure exactly how I’m going to redirect my attention. I just know I have to do it - QUICKLY!

Good luck with your ankle. Hopefully it is nothing serious. Life can be so distracting at times, I have fallen into that rut myself. You know what you are doing wrong, you can correct it! We are here for you! Anne

Claire, you have to eat anyway so why not try to just "pack yourself a picnic" for the day first thing in the morning. I actually eat better on school days because I have to plan it. I've been thinking that it might be a good practice for days that I'm not in school too. It takes me about 15 minutes to put together my school-day meals and snacks and pack them into plastic containers. I can even weight out my meat, measure my rice, bag up my baby carrots and snap peas and cut up my fruit. Then, I don't have to think about it the rest of the day. I take a string cheese, low fat yogurt cup, hard-boiled egg or cottage cheese for a protein snack to go with my fruit or veggie. I take 3 snacks and a lunch because I have to have a good snack after my PE class, and sometimes I have errands to run after classes and that way I have that extra snack with me to keep me out of the drive-thru. Think picnic and it's not so hard.

I hope things turn out well with the ankle!
