Poor Turtle

Friday, April 20, 2012

So we moved to a new Barn on Sunday. He was put into general population (turned out w/ the herd) on Tuesday. I could not stop at the barn Tuesday night.

Was turned out again Wednesday and I was there Wednesday to check on him. He's missing some hair from a few kicks, which is typical. His left front and right rear had some swelling and heat so I cold hosed him off.

Thursday he was turned out again and Thursday night the swelling and heat was gone from the left front, but the right rear was twice as swollen, around the ankle. FIGURES, this is the night I planned to ride.

Figured Murphy's law, if I tacked him up, he'll be lame. If I don't he'll be sound and I'll have to walk back to tack him up and then he'll be lame. So I just tacked him up.

He walked to the ring fine. Got on. He felt really fresh and ready to go. We explored the indoor and he got to look at everything for about 10 minutes, then I asked for a trot.

Felt like someone knocked his rear end out from underneath him, he took a few more steps and walked. Hmm emoticonthat's not good. Asked again in case it was just stiffness and same thing happend. Bummer dude.

One a good note, the swelling went down 50% from just that walking around for 10 minutes. So I linimanted him and wrapped him. They're supposed to take his wraps off this morning before they let him out. I'll check him tonight. I'm hoping for no heat and 50% or less swelling.

He did this when I first got him to, being silly in turn out until he gets adjusted to his new mates.

I certainly hope the lameness doesn't last. emoticon Poor baby.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I used to rub my horse with a solution of cider vinegar and water, it helped some with fights because it made it harder for the other horses to pick up his scent. I saw one horse kick another one and he broke his leg. The other horse had to be put down.

That is normal for horses ? Is it like dogs finding the alpha one?
