The exploration of tofu

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

I have been trying all different types of tofu and soy products just to try something different and lower my meat intake. I never realized there are two types of tofu, silken & firm. I'm used to having the little pieces of it in hot & sour soup and it's okay. I look at it as just a filler, like water chesnuts.
I tried tofu curry yesterday, the texture was like a chewy egg. Do they fry it? I should have probably asked that before hand. I enjoyed the dish and will order it again.

How do you feel about it? I'm trying to love it, but just feeling rather eh about it.

Tofu look so weird to me. Good thing I'm allergic to soy and don't have to deal with it! Haha

Good luck with it!

I'm okay with tofu, and I would like to have more of it (because I've only had it unseasoned in stir-fry). However, it costs like $10/lb here, and even chicken (which is super expensive) is less than that. I guess soybeans just haven't hit France yet!

I second EVERYTHING that EDENZMOM said! Great info!

Tofu can be really good! I have made mexican breakfast scramble burritos with it, stir frys, noodle bowls, even in soups like you mentioned. I would just be mindful of how much you are consuming. I know I have to be careful about soy products because too much can interfere with some medications that I am on, but you can do your own research and see what you think. Let me know if you find any good recipes!

    good fo you!
I'm an avid carnivore as well, but i find tofu so much more reasonable, and so much more convenient!
The firm or extra firm tofu works really well diced and stir-fried in a pan with cooking spray and spices. it's better if you marinate them first with a dry rub of spices... mmmm... or some BBQ sauce or salad dressing... depends on the nutritional values you're looking for. I love tofu, and eat more than half a brick at a time, stir fried wtih as many green leafy things that i can find: kale, spinach, bok-choy... whatever's on sale lol...
Here's what I do as a time saver: I get the firmest tofu that i can find (sometimes the chilli-flavoured one, or the herb and spice one... tons to choose from), and I dice it up really small, and throw it in the toaster oven at 400F until it's goldenbrown. might need to toss it a few times. Let me tell you, I use them as croutons in a salad, or as a crunchy snack on it's own... packed with protein and fantastic!
There's also the textured soy products (TSP) -- that look like ground beef. with the right seasoning, or the pre-seasoned ones, you can sub that in for tacos, fajitas, in chilis, in Sheppards pie... anywhere that you would use ground beef! I've never used it to make meatballs or burgers, but it's so yummy... although I read it can be high in sodium.
as for the SILKEN tofu... I have a secret for you! ...use it instead of cream for a protein filled and insanely creamy alfredo sauce for pasta or cooked veggies. i swear, even my boyfriend and toddler don't know the difference, and found it so yummy! you can do that, or use it in shakes.
Goodluck, and let me know if you try any of this!
