Hello! I am so thrilled to see the support from my previous blog post. I have written blogs in the past and have never had support like that...it makes me a happy sparker! Thank you!
Ever heard of Compartment Syndrome? No? Not surprised! If you said yes to yourself, I bet you have it too....and I am sorry...it sucks. Not too many people know of this syndrome unless you have it. I have it in my legs and it is similar to shin splints but oh so much worse.
Compartment Syndrome as I know it:
(I am not a doctor!! This is just from the research I have done and from what Doctors have told me) Basically, you have compartments in your legs and when you work out, your muscles need to expand, and your compartments stretch to allow this to happen. My compartments do not expand which causes unbelievable pressure in my legs/shins and it got to the point where I guess the circulation to my feet became an issue.
So I played college soccer...I was actually pretty good at one point....but my during my freshmen year I was battling issues with my shins. It got to the point where I would take off my shinguards and cleats and my feet would be swollen and purple. It freaked me out! (Obviously) So I went and got tested for compartment syndrome and low and behold I had it.The test (super painful) is where they stick a large needle into your shin in three different places and measure the pressure. You run for 30 minutes on a treadmill and then they stick you again. Ouch. Average pressure after running is under 30 I think...mine was in the 70's!!! We made an appointment for surgery (to cut slits in the compartment) immediately. This was 2006 when, thank goodness for my sanity, the World Cup was going on. I actually got feeling back in my feet after a year or so and things got so much better. I have 4 huge ugly scars going down my leg but it adds character...right??
So why am I writing about this now?? I am having similar issues and I am afraid I might have Compartment Syndrome in other compartments in my legs. It is down near my ankles now so....uhh I am feeling pretty bummed. I have a doctors appointment this week...hopefully I can get some good news!
