The obstacles we erect!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

I read a LOT of blogs. I find useful information, recipes, fitness tips, etc. I also see my own behaviors in others writings and it helps me be accountable to myself. It also gives me a broad picture of the types of obstacles we face on our journey to "Health & Nutrition".

This journey is not a Saturday afternoon drive through the park. It is an arduous journey over difficult roads with many obstacles. While some are unavoidable (injuries, illnesses, family crisis, etc) many are. We tend to erect our OWN obstacles. It's almost as if we are "reluctant" to reach our destination or want to "prolong" the journey.

I'm no psychologist but I have lived decades being obese and I recognize that we set up our own obstacles. Let me list some. Perhaps you will recognize some of them. We can't knock them down until we see them accurately.

1) Free food can't be passed up. If they offered you free poison would you take it? How about free garbage? A lot of the FREE food we eat is detrimental to our healthy journey. Free is not CALORIE free. How often do you eat the samples at the grocery? Those calories COUNT. Are YOU counting them?

2) But I had a coupon! Re-read number 1.

3) It was a celebration. There are too many holidays in a year to eat with abandon and I won't even mention the 6 week buffet from Thanksgiving to New Year's. Some holidays drag on because we can't resist the 1/2 price Halloween and Easter candy (see #1 again). Then there are the birthdays - ours, family, friends, coworkers, weddings, funerals, office parties, etc. Not to mention church pot-lucks, fellowship meals, poker night, Bonco, Girl's night etc.

4) I'm between challenges so I'm taking a break. A break from what? Your body does not quit absorbing calories and turning them into fat just because you are not currently in a challenge! My personal physician recently said that weight regained quickly is ALL fat.

5) I'm too tired to cook. You don't have to cook to eat healthy. You can buy prebagged salad, veggies, fruit, healthy frozen entrees, sandwich fixings and soup ready to go!

6) I like to eat out! Me too! I have a list of "healthy options" for all the main restaurants: McDonald's, Wendy's, Subway, Applebee's, Chili's, Friday's, Uno's, even Red Robin. You just have to have your plan before you go and STICK to it!

7) I don't have time to exercise. Everyone has time. You don't have to do it in one long session. Have 5 minutes waiting at the busstop? Do Calf raises, Side Bends, Hip Flexors, etc. On hold with technical support - grab two weights and do some bicep curls, triceps extensions and squats. The same goes for standing at the copier. There is always time for fitness!

8) I'm on vacation! Even on vacation you can make better choices. Getting fitness can be fun - hiking, kayaking, swimming, dancing, and walking! Make "better" food choices. There is always a BETTER option even if you don't eat the watercress sandwich with a glass of water (joking). My point is just that you CAN be healthy even while having fun!

These are just some of the obstacles we set up for ourselves. I do think for people that have fought obesity for years there is a bit of a "fear" about getting to goal. For some of us our obesity has been an EXCUSE to "not". The "nots" vary from individual to individual but as long as we can tell ourselves "they didn't like me because I was fat" or "they didn't promote me because I am fat" we don't have to question if it was some OTHER reason.

Bottom line - this journey is difficult enough - don't erect your OWN obstacles!

So much of what you wrote I can relate to 100%....it is hard, but bit by bit I am learning to shut out or shout down those ignorant little voices in my head that want to sabotage my efforts to get and stay healthy. It is a process though - the toughest time being when the emotions join in with those pesky little voices. Worse even still, when I let myself get too tired, or angry or bored. Thanks for the much needed reminders!

My biggest obstacle is anger, and most everything flows from that.

My anger is from being the goody-two-shoes I've been all my life. I didn't do the obvious bad, unhealthy things like drinking, drug abuse, smoking, etc., etc. The things I did were all legal and relatively healthful. I grew up to be a Codependent, which is difficult enough.

I've used mostly food, television, and music to deal with the stresses of life. Yes, they made me big, but I've almost always felt that way. Twice in my life I've been the right size, and both times something big and bad happened. My reaction was to start eating again.

What really makes me angry on a regular basis is that even though "obesity," by any name, is now an actual illness, it still has the stigma. It seems to me that society in general views obesity with the same distaste as alcoholics, drug addicts and the like. So, after being so good after all this time (I'm 56 now), it still bothers me.

The second time that I got down to the right size, I maintained that for two or three years. Domestic violence and the resulting divorce was the trigger that made me to decide that "I'm going to eat my sweets." That was three years ago.

I've started yet again by joining the local YWCA, and have started in a deep-water fitness class. I also am working at going past my comfort zone to do the treadmill and strength training that I know work.

I all for doing the right thing for myself, but it's really frustrating at this point.

My main reasons for starting the effort again are for my ADHD and depression, anxiety, etc. I was diagnosed ADHD after age 50. Fun, eh?

Thanks. emoticon

Thank you for the GREAT post! I could really relate: my head can talk me out of anything that's good for me! Your post reminded me to challenge those irrational and self-defeating thoughts that pop up... challenge them with logic and self-love. Thanks! emoticon

Thanks for this. I have an awful big obstacle at present which I blogged about and that is lack of motivation. I'm currently lacking in focus and need to be jolted back to my former self of 3 months ago, eating less and regular exercise classes.

Your blog was a great help to me though.

Thanks for the blog, it was both interesting and inspiring. Unfortunately, it hit a little too close to home. I recognized myself in most, if not all, of the eight points. Bless you as you continue your journey to health and look forward to hearing what you have to say next. Keep it up, you have a real gift for writing.

I'm so happy I just read this! Check out this example of "erecting an obstacle" that I was just preparing to commit: Tomorrow I go for my final weigh-in at Weight Watchers, after 6 weeks of "maintenance", in order to achieve the free "Lifetime membership" status. I was planning to go get weighed-in the morning because later tomorrow I'm attending a birthday party that I happen to know will be catered by my absolute favorite restaurant, plus there will also be chocolate cake (among other desserts). I had it in my mind that I would get my "good" weight recorded, and then celebrate by eating with abandon at this party. DUMB! STUPID! IDIOTIC! Seriously--what was I thinking?! God grant me the strength to remember this blog post, and keep myself from self-sabotage. Thank you!

Wow, if anyone needed to read this, I did. I'm between challenges, having been to the store every day buying reduced price Easter candy AND bought fully fattening chocolate ice cream yesterday because it was super double coupons at the store. Are you kidding me?!?!

Thanks for the kick I needed this morning!!! emoticon

GREAT excuse blockers! A lady I eat lunch with was telling us today how she put together a fruit salad to take to a dinner at her daughter's house. She went to the stupendous salad & fruit buffet set up at our local grocery store chain (HyVee), and made her fruit salad that way. There is no cleaning of fruit, no leftover fruit (other than what is left in our salad), no wasting of money by having to buy a WHOLE watermelon, pineapple or cantaloupe and then only using half of it. I'm using this idea! Plus when somebody else has cleaned it and cut it up, for some reason it just tastes better. The same with salad for me. I get so burnt out on salads that I prepare, but always enjoy them when I go out.

I liked how you said you have a list of things you can order at your "main" go-to restaurants. I do too! I have found you can even ask for low-fat dressing at Olive Garden, it tastes the same as their regular Italian dressing and I bet you save a couple hundred calories, making your salad way less fattening! Even at restaurants that don't have a LEAN section on the menu, I can order a salad and customize it for my needs. It's possible to eat healthy anywhere I think. Well just about anywhere.

Excellent indeed--- Thank you! All these reasons are in my bag of excuses, and you have blown my "cover'.... Free food at the office; how tempting this is! Those special deal coupons for bad stuff--- no bargain! Just recently---Easter candy at 75% off, but still has 100% calories!! Health and wellness are 100% worth the effort!....
