There was a great featured blog back on March 22, encouraging us to embrace baby steps to reach our goals. It really resonated with me, so much so that I am now blogging about that blog. Why, today, am I inspired by the blog from a month ago, you might be wondering?
Because... I was totally MIA from Spark for a while when life got "busy", and all of a sudden I had over 500 daily Spark emails saved to go though. I was feeling inspired this weekend and decided it was time to get Sparking, so rather than delete them all, I dove in and went through them. And go through them I did! And still am, truth be told. After several dedicated days, I have been able to work them down to those that I really want to take time and read. I have about 40 or so left. But the baby step email made the 'final cut.' After reading it, I thought, you know, going through the emails felt daunting at first, but it was fun. Like a Spark marathon! And setting the time to just do it, well, I guess you could say that was a baby step.
That post really got me thinking; I have became a baby step kind of girl and just didn't know it. I was all or nothing about two years ago, but burnt out when I wasn't the perfectionist I strove to be. So then I embraced the a hand's-off, don't stress mentality. Much better, except, my efforts dwindled down to really nothing at all, short of just trying to be as healthy as possible. Now, in 2012, my motto is "A Little Goes a Long Way." I have found out that I have indeed created several healthy habits that have just stuck and become a part of life. Nothing earth-shattering, but I can say that:
I eat breakfast!
My snacks are HEALTHY!
Processed foods are a rare exception these days.
I am sleeping at least 7 hours a night now!
I almost always take the stairs.
I cut back on cocktails!
While I may feel healthier just from these tune-ups, I'm not shedding weight. I am still bouncing somewhere between 10lbs on and off. That is a huge yo-yo for someone only 5 feet tall. So, what baby steps do I have in front of me?
I need to pay more attention to portion sizes. Healthy is healthy, but, there can still be too much of a good thing.
I've not found a way to make honest to goodness physical activity a part of each and every day. I am sooo hit or miss.
I'm still not drinking enough water.
Not bad, really. I need to just tackle these three things, one little baby step at a time until I have created healthy habits in these areas.
I know, not rocket science. But, as G.I. Joe says, "knowing is half the battle." And now, after a little bit of dedicated thinking about it, I know!
