Tulips, trauma, and trucks

Friday, April 13, 2012

My sister and I are getting ready to go to a Tulip Festival a couple hours away. We rented a cabin for tonight abd tomorrow night. Her boyfriend will be in drill with the Nat'l Guard, so we'll have major quality sister time. We live in the same house but we commute at different times, plus she's my favorite person, so I never feel like I see her enough.
We really don't know what to expect. We've never been to the area we're going to and didn't have much time to research and make a list, but we're quite happy winging it. She did read about an event that displays semi trucks. 1) My sister has always said that if she wasn't a legal secretary, she'd be a truck driver 2) we have no clue what semi trucks have to do with tulips. Maybe we'll understand when we get there. I don't think she cares. She's exhilarated by the thought of being surrounded by semi trucks. I can't judge. I once quit my meaningful do-gooder job for 2 years to professionally mow my wealthy neighbors golf course, brush fields and 200 acres of his ranch because he was willing to pay me well and because I love lawn mowers. He had all types of lawn mowers; the kind with a platform you stand on, one I had to climb a ladder to get to the seat, greens mowers, and of course push mowers. I miss that job, but he passed away so I had to go back to doing good for the homeless women.
Speaking of which, this past week brought a terrible combination for me: a big donation of Easter candy and a few women going through trauma recovery in not the healthiest ways, which led to me experiencing secondary trauma and recovering with candy, also not the healthiest way. We have lots of support for secondary trauma and I was able to get that support over the last couple days, so I'm much better. Honestly, I'm ok for now with eating candy because I still need practice not reacting that way, but now its fewer and farther between and I recover quickly and have stepped up my exercise. Karen made me do a list of non scale victories. Those are 3 big ones that add up to 5 in my mind!
I've already had a big pile of veggies today and since my sisters man won't be with us this weekend, it'll be a lot easier for us to eat healthy.
Oh, and last weekend, the spa was wonderful, the art gallery was cool, but it wasn't cool to take pictures of the art so no pictures for you, and I took 4 naps on Sunday.
Mandatory fun

Fewer candy attacks is definitely better. Going the right direction. It sounds as if you will have a lot of fun with your sister, not matter what a tulip festival/big rig rally combo might look like. I'm glad you are getting that time together.

Have fun at the tulip festival. That is one thing I miss-we really don't get cold enough for them-some folks force them but they aren't nearly as big and nice as what we had up north. I too wonder how semi trucks tie in, but it should be interesting. We have a big semi truck show about 15 mi from us every year and since DH used to drive a big rig, he enjoys going to see them.
Enjoy
Pat
