Help my granddaugher is eating all my spinach!!!

Thursday, April 12, 2012

I remembe when people used to try to get their kids to eat spinach by talking about Popeye the Sailor Man who ate a can of spinach whenever he was in trouble and needed his muscles. Now canned spinach isn't really that great. Maybe that's why it took a lot of encouraging, prompting, bribing, threatening to get the kids to eat it. But I like to buy fresh spinach and throw it into my salads. My my 9 year old granddaughter has developed a lot for the raw spinach now. I bought a bag yesterday and she asked me yesterday if she could have some because she does like to eat it when I have it. Of course I told her she could When I checked the bag today to make a green smoothie it was 2/3rds gone! Oh well, I'll share with her LOL!
I tried green smoothie today with frozen peaches, some protein powder, a cup of spinach, and of course little ice thrown in the blender because I like it thick. It was really good! So that is my healthy lunch today because I had big breakfast. So many more things I can try with smoothies! I've made them before with the protein poweder, a little water, a little ice, and frozen or fresh fruits but this is the first time with the spinach. Definitely a keeper! If my granddaughter leaves me any at least.

What a good grammy - I never liked cooked spinach as a child, either, but fresh - yeah, that's the ticket! Green smoothies rock - yum!

I have never made green smoothies but have to say that having a granddaughter who eats too much of your spinach is a nice 'problem' to have, haha!

I remember that canned spinach. I thought spinach was supposed to be slimy, and I wondered why Popeye enjoyed it so much. But fresh .. yum! Glad you're willing to share.

I'm finding that all of my kids like spinach. Who'd of guessed? I didn't even have to talk them into trying it. I haven't done smoothies yet. I may have to give them a try.

I love spinach too, but never tried it in a smoothie -I just do fruit shakes with protein powder -not sure if my hand mixer would be powerful enough to make spinach smooth.. That is great you are encouraging your granddaughter with healthy habits!!
Enjoy!

I'm a huge spinach lover too. I put in in everything - omelettes, meatloaf, spaghetti - and use it anywhere I'd use lettuce. I think it's great that your granddaughter is picking up good habits now. She's got a great example in you.

that is great that she is eating spinach and I agree that the can is nasty but the fresh is great and I also make it by saute it on the stove with some olive oil in onions and garlic and salt n pepper until just wilted and dark green not over cooked(like the cans are). You will find that it is great tasting too.

That is wonderful that your granddaughter loves her spinach!!! I've been wanting to try a green smoothie with spinach but don't have any protein powder. Guess I could make it without it. I heard strawberries were also good with the spinach.

I'm probably one of the few people in the world who actually loves canned spinach (fresh too). I used to offer to take it off the plates of the kids at school who didn't like it but had to have a clean plate to go back for seconds on what they did like. I "cleaned up," as they say.

I love smoothies too. I add spinach or kale and also a piece of beet or carrot. As long as there proportionally more fruit, that's all I taste. I love to use raisins if it needs "sweetening." Lots of potassium.

I love adding spinach to spagetti, too; doesn't add any flavor at all, but oh wow, the oomph factor!

Yes, the spinach is SO great for smoothies, and for making juices, too! It gives the great green color & nutrition, but virtually no flavor. Other greens, like kale & chard & turnip or collard greens, are not so tasty!!!
