My grandmother was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. She is in her early 80's so it is pretty serious even though it is a fairly treatable cancer. My family has decided to go spend some time with her to help her get through this tough time ... and to have a few last memories of her in case this thing doesn't turn out positively. And we leave tonight.
I do have a plan for success, though! I will bring some walnuts and grapes on the trip with me for snacking. I'm eating dinner before we leave. We're staying at a hotel that has a continental breakfast so I know I can get some fruits and a scrambled egg for breakfast. Lunch will be a little bit of an issue as it will be gotten on the road but I have my smartphone to help me choose a place that has a healthy menu choice. Then ... there will be the actual time spent at my family's houses.
Everyone knows I'm trying to eat healthy. My cousin and sister are both trying to do the same thing so I hope they will have some healthy foods to choose from come dinner time. If not, the small town they live in does have a grocery store! I plan on stopping in at least once during the trip to get at least me something to eat.
My family are country. Really country. We're from the Ozark mountains so food is a major part of life. Beans, potatoes, fatty meats ... they were all major parts of my ancestor's diet. And it hasn't seemed to have changed much in the last 80 years. Genes, habits, will power ... all will be tested this next week. I'm going to stay positive, though!
