The story of the 106th calf..

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Hi..hubby was gone to Weyburn for his meeting so I was holding down the fort.. he left right after lunch..so I was in charge of the herd...at the 2:30 pm check a first calf black heifer had her tail out..a sign of calving...so I checked her again in an hour and she had a water bag out...I used the quad and put her in the corral to give her some more time...another hour later and she had feet coming..
so I called hubby..he said he'd be home soon and give her another 1/2 hour..so I took the quad and checked through all the herd of pairs for any sick ones and all were fine...back to check the heifer and still no more progress so I put her in the chute and made sure the head was coming, too...all was fine so let her out of the chute...when hubby came home shortly we put her back in the chute and hubby pulled the calf..all was fine..a healthy..huge baby bull calf...

Well that was what I did all afternoon...I also did some puttering in the house, did a bit more gardening and moved around some cattle ...my legs are pretty tired tonight and some of the trips I used the quad..

First thing in the morning the pasture warehouse phoned to say they were coming out with a newer tractor and to get the older one here..so we needed to see if it would start..no where near a plug in..so we used some ether and then boosted it to start...while the guys unloaded and loaded the tractors I used the quad to check the herd of cow calf pairs...

Then helped with chores and opening gates, etc...after a quick lunch, hubby took off....I had put a beef roast in the crock pot so we could have a quick supper at what ever time hubby got home..

My neighbor phoned with morning to give us the news that our friend who was our best man at our wedding is a grandpa..his oldest daughter had twin boys this morning!!

The hockey playoffs start today..I was having hockey withdrawal..haha..so I'm watching the Vancouver game while I type this...I think it's time for beer and popcorn..hubby has the munchies....(I'll have light beer and air popped popcorn with no butter or salt..how I like it!)

We only had the one calf today so far..they have slowed down a bit..just under 30 left to calve....

Well time to make the popcorn..thanks for dropping by and keep on Sparkin'

the seemingly stuck calf would have me worried sick! Glad it was an ok birth. It sounds like you are a very busy Lady and will be glad when the calving is al over. Good luck with the rest of the herd. Lucinda
