Marathon Babysteps Day

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

So, my usual plan for house keeping whenever I have an entire day off during the week is to do laundry & shopping & cleaning. Not actually a plan...more of a dream. I start out strong, and fizzle out before noon. At the end of the day, not much is completed.
So, today will be different.

I will complete one babystep, then another and another. I will take breaks and stop when I feel overwhelmed. Hopefully, by stringing them all together, I will see a difference.
Then, I will step back and be content with what I have accomplished and not beat myself up over what I didn't get to.

I'll let you know how it goes :-)

9:30 am
Dog-do scooped
Quilt & sheets washed & hung out on the line
Plants watered
End table* cleared, dusted & only what belongs there (lamp, remotes, coasters) replaced.
*this is my "Oasis of Order". When my end table is clutter-free, I feel less stressed & more likely to keep other problem areas of my home de-cluttered.
RSVP'd to a baby shower (invitation was buried on said end table)

Collected trash throughout the house & taken to the dumpster
Cleaned bedroom ceiling fan
Moved part of LR furniture, vacuumed under it & moved it back
Made up the bed w/clean sheets & quilt

Breaking until after lunch

Slowing down some...
Hung another load of laundry on the line
Removed stick on numbers from an address sign for the lake house. DH will sand it down & re-paint it on Saturday.
Shortened new pillow cases (we have a king bed, but prefer standard pillows - the sets always include king pillow cases)
Taking a break for a glass of water & a half hour of HGTV
Called my Mom - now my heart is smiling

Late afternoon
Grocery shopping

No, the house isn't tidy and dinner wasn't anything to write home about, but I got a lot done

Wow! You accomplished plenty. I was tired just reading it.

    You got ALOT done!!

FlyLady calls this "crashing and burning". You are soooooooo right about starting and stopping. She says set the timer for 15 mins, get as much done as you can, and then . . . this is the best part . . . STOPPPPPPP!

It has taken me sooooooo long to adopt her methods . . . I fought her mindset with heels dug in every step of the way, told everyone and told myself 1,000 reasons why her way wouldn't work, and, wouldn't work for me, and why she was full of it.

Now: I don't Spring Clean. I don't clean all day long. The house, bathroom, kitchen, stays clean. I clean all the time, a little everyday in my host family's house; they are A-#1-A-mazed, that the kitchen stays clean. I did the floor, countertops, dishes and sink this morning. It took so much less than 30 mins . . . I'd say less than 20. I would have NEVER believed that could be true, before FlyLady.

Have you ever tried her Weekly Home Blessing, so you don't have to clean all day long?

I do 2 Weekly Home Blessing items per day, plus morning routine and before bed routine. I swish & swipe the camode whenever I go to the bathroom, and I pee in a different one each time I so so I can clean a different one. Every time I take a shower or bath, I clean one section of the shower walls, or, clean the tub while the water drains out while I'm sitting in it, with cheap shampoo on washcloth; it is self-rinsing, no fumes, and now the bath & tub "stay clean", just like the toilet "stays clean", and the kitchen . . . the bed stays made, everything seems so simple now. But it was alien to me and I fought it every step of the way.

Check out Weekly Home Blessing link, and check out Crisis Cleaning Link, in my signature line on any post. FlyLady is so encouraging and speaks in a way that is such a blessing, in those links.

I sometimes do it all in one day and it's totally exhausting. Doing just one of those in one day is an accomplishment. Just do what you can and don't worry about the rest. Like my grandma said it isn't going anywhere. LOL.
