Dragonfly: lessons in life

Monday, April 09, 2012

"The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world symbolizes change and change in the perspective of self realization; and the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.

The traditional association of Dragonflies with water also gives rise to this meaning to this amazing insect. The Dragonfly’s scurrying flight across water represents an act of going beyond what’s on the surface and looking into the deeper implications and aspects of life.

The dragonfly normally lives most of its life as a nymph or an immature. It flies only for a fraction of its life and usually not more than a few months. This adult dragonfly does it all in these few months and leaves nothing to be desired. This style of life symbolizes and exemplifies the virtue of living IN the moment and living life to the fullest. By living in the moment you are aware of who you are, where you are, what you are doing, what you want, what you don’t and make informed choices on a moment-to-moment basis.
" The above comes from this site: http://www.dragonfly-site.com/

I wanted to talk about this in retrospect of my son and his focus on life. It was from things that I tried to teach him. It brings to minds things that need to be shared with others.
My son, Jack, was very fascinated with dragons/dragonflies. In studying more about this unique creature it makes sense because they defined very much of his inner being.

Self-realization is something we should all strive for in life. Instead of trying to emulate others because we are envious of their beauty, or wealth, or possessions, we should focus on the qualities that they possess and see if that part of us which is unique can be given up to attain what is seen on the outside. We should learn who we really are inside of ourselves. What makes you tick, what make you happy, what makes you feel challenged and invigorated with life. Strive to be the best you that you can be. One has to realize that life has a deeper meaning than what one can see on the surface.

Looking beyond the surface of a situation demands that you realizes that the world operates even without you in the equation. Some of the biggest stress's in life that I have heard expressed deal with how someone perceived by what they saw only as to how a waitress, customer service person, a doctor, nurse, etc. reacted to them Remember every person that you encounter has a family with problems, a boss, health issues, sore feet, bills to pay, and stressors too. These all affects how they react and how you react to a situation. You were not there to see what happened before you walked in the door either.
Things are not always what they seem. The main reason that I have tried not to judge a person by my first impression is that it might be the odd moment for the person. Do you not do things that you do not understand why you did?

if we all lived life in the moment as does the dragonfly then we would be aware of who we are, where we are, what we are doing, what we want, what we don’t and make informed choices on a moment-to-moment basis.

As far as living a healthy lifestyle, we need to be like the dragonfly and live our life in the moment. Do not eat for comfort, for memories, to settle nerves, to make the preparer happy,, but only to stay healthier in the moments that we have to live life to its fullest.

I cannot tell you how beautiful this is. Your message is spot on. If we DON'T live moment-to-moment we will miss some of the most valuable life lessons we're supposed to learn or teach!

I so agree with you that first impressions are sometimes sooooo wrong. I just have leasnred in life that you HAVE to give the benefit of the doubt to people you encounter because you just DON'T know what's going on in their life behind the scenes. It's quite different if a particular off putting behavior is a constant pattern, but even at that . . . there is a story behind it.

    Fantastic reminder. Fantastic blog.
