We started our day Easter Sunday with an outdoor sunrise service. This is my favorite way to celebrate Easter. When you first get to the service, people are scurrying around getting ready for the service. It is dark and chilly outside and the quiet seeps into your soul. Other people arrive with chairs and blankets to sit upon. There is the general noise associated with the increase of activity. The service is sponsored by the local group of outreach ministries so many different types of churches participate. There is a sense of community here.
The service begins. Music reaches out into the stillness and surrounds my heart. I feel a tremendous sense of peace. I look around and see about 75 other people who have come to worship and welcome the message of Easter. The sky is beginning to lighten, birds awaken and begin to chirp. Those gathered begin to sing beautiful, cherished songs. These songs and the message given by one of the ministers/priests remind me of the hope and promise of Easter.
The service begins to draw to a close. The sun peeks through the clouds. The birds burst into song. People smile and let their joy bubble over. It is contagious. My heart lifts and my lips curve as I absorb the peaceful beauty of the morning. There is new hope with the sunrise and the message of Easter!
