What can One Woman do?

Monday, April 02, 2012

Big question.

What can any one person do?

Well, I am about to find out.

I have begun 100 training runs - 99 training runs actually, and one final big event... a 50K.

It is not an event actually, but a personal journey. But I have chosen to use this personal journey to support a local organization, the Dayton Montessori Society, in order to elevate this undertaking to another level... to expand my quest beyond myself.

***

The idea began over four years ago, when I first started running to get in shape. I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to run a marathon for my 50th birthday?" A few years later I realized a few key things:

1) I can do more than I ever thought before.

2) Training for a 1/2 marathon is a lot of work and time commitment - a Marathon?!? - much more.

3) I can if I want to, but do I really want to? No, not really - knowing is enough.

***

But alas, the Golden year is upon me. And I know if I get to the end of the year without having run a marathon, I will be angry with myself for not finishing what I started four years ago. So, NO, knowing is Not Enough.

So then I thought, find a great Marathon to run.

*

*Step inside my brain for a while if you dare*

No, it can't be on your birthday - it is in July. Who wants to do that to themself in July?!?

So find a great event somewhere. Damn, these flippin' things get expensive... Especially if it is in a great location.

Scratch...

Claim your own piece of road/trail/whatever and make it your own personal marathon.

Why should I pay someone else for something I can do any time I want? ;)

*

My friend, Mary, is heading up a new non-profit - the Dayton Montessori Society.

This is a big, brave step for her. If she can do that, certainly I can run a marathon.

***SO...

Instead of spending money to run, why don't I run to raise money???

And so, I am running to raise money for the Dayton Montessori Society.

In this way, reaching my goal helps others to reach theirs.

(And that is how my brain works.)

*

But wait.... I said 50K earlier, didn't I?

Well, that is because a marathon is a major milestone.

But 26.2 miles just doesn't jive with my 50th birthday, like 50K - so 31.06 miles it is then! ;)

(Again - how my brain works... sigh)

*

So here is the deal.

Remember the old Pledge-a-thons?

Support me in my goal. Pledge whatever you like per kilometer.

(.10/k = $5, .25/k = $12.50 , $1.00/k = $50... you call it!)

Those funds will be donated to the Dayton Montessori Society.

Support me on my run. Run with me, get people to pledge to Your kilometers so You can donate to the Dayton Montessori Society. You don't have to run the whole thing - get pledges to run 5k, 10k, 15k, however much you can muster.

OR

Support me on my run, by coming out on the route and cheering me, and whoever else tags along, on. We will appreciate the enthusiasm... especially if you get there toward the end!

Or volunteer with the support team.

Or run the last 5K with me (we hope to organize this as an event within an event).

Of course any donations at all are welcome!

The details are forthcoming.

I will be doing this in October, with or without your support, but I would much rather with!

Because this is One thing this one woman can do.

How about you?

Hey, Bill! Training goes well, thus far - 40% complete.
You should come run some with me! ;)
Take care!

I'm sure you can tackle this! You just add a few weeks to marathon training and WHAM! you've got a 50K. I can attest that marathon training isn't easy, but put in the hard work and it can be yours.

I love it! Im a year behind you and have always had the same goal. If you were closer, I'd definitely run some of it with you! Best of luck and keep us posted.
