SP not working!?

Sunday, April 01, 2012

I posted the message below on the message board and was looking for more ideas...

I am looking for ideas to help my dad. He and my mom just joined SP. They say they are following the calorie ranges and hiking on the weekends. He is around 5'7... i looked at his ranges. It was from 1550-1700 something. He was listed as needing to burn 680 cal per week. My mom said she hasnt lost anything and said my dad gained weight. Its upsetting to me because i LOVE sp. Their comments were that my site doesnt work. I said my dad might be eating too little and hes still not drinking water (diet pepsi). He said the diet is too hard to follow and thats why my mom quit yrs ago. They dont get on the computer that frequently and dont have smart phones. My mom has been making spark recipes. They used to do atkins. Any ideas what might be the problem?? My guess is not enough calories and the diet soda, but even if his calories r low shouldnt he have lost at the beginning?? Its just frustrating that they say sp doesnt work:( thanks for any ideas/suggestions.

I think the biggest pro with SP for me is the blogging and the support I find here - not so much the diet. There are guidelines with all diets that must be followed. I think the ideas behind SP are great. The calorie range is good, but remind them of the other things that are important and mentioned in The Spark. The goal setting has been extremely helpful and motivating. Making a goal for nutrition, physical fitness, and mental health has shown me that this can be a healthy lifestyle change and not just a diet. I use the blog feature as a journal more for myself than anything. If they don't get online, maybe they could use a planner or spiral to journal and reflect in. I actually use a planner and then blog later. I know that I can always go back to my blogs (where as I might lose my planner - knowing me!) so I like to keep it online so I have a record of my journey. I also like the message boards, comments left on blogs, and teams so that I can get motivation or support from others going through the same thing. The articles are insightful and motivating as well. I will admit, the first time I got on SP I didn't use it to its fullest and I dropped off of it after a month, not understanding its full potential. I am back a second time and realize how useful it can be. I hope they find what works for them. Just thought I'd offer some thoughts!

Diet soda has a ton of salt - he has to get off that for sure.

As for the calorie burn, that doesn't sound like enough calories. SO I would take a peek at his start weight and goal weight and see what DATE he put in for getting there. That's what will shift those calories and fitness goals around.

If they can't get on the computer and log much - this will be a hard thing for them to keep up with.

Hope this helps a little.
