How Do You Measure Success?

Sunday, April 01, 2012

This afternoon, after a very difficult morning, I managed to please my grouchy, recalcitrant daughter.

She launched herself at me in gratitude, wrapping her arms around my waist. She clasped her hands together at my back and we giggled and rocked when she suddenly froze. She tipped her face up at me (she didn't have to lean back to avoid the roll... she just had to tilt her chin up), eyes widening, as her arms stayed tight around my waist...

"Mom! I can hold you around the waist! I can hold my hands behind you!"

(Previously, when hugging me, she'd rest her hands on the 'shelf' my butt created, and would sometimes tap out a loving rhythm, LOL!)

Now, MY eyes widen, and I freeze for a fraction of a moment... and what's left of my belly begins to shake with laughter, as she giggles and squeezes tighter.

"Yes! Yes you can, my Love!"

Six months ago my daughter couldn't wrap her arms completely around me... and she hasn't grown all that much... but apparently my waist has dimished that much!

We did a little dance in circles, as she kept squeezing and patting me... checking out the new territory... redefining 'mom' in her mind... both of us giggling with the joy of it all... having a little more fun than yesterday when she couldn't get comfortable lying on top of me on the couch (we like to read like this... easier to share the pictures)... our hip bones kept bumping together, LOL... but we figured it out!

My daughter is coming to enjoy the thinner me... when I first began this journey (I've been very open and honest with her about what I'm doing, what it means to me, and what I hope to achieve) she worried about how I might be different if I were thinner and said as much (interesting that she would even consider this)... and we talk A LOT about beauty and how it relates to body image, body size, what it means to be fat/thin... and I feel very blessed to be so loved. My husband and daughter have never seen/treated me as 'fat' and they have found joy, comfort and refuge in this body at every size... my size has never defined me in their eyes.

However, how do I measure success... and my waist?

I have a new and preferred way... my daughter's arms!

(NOT The Divine Miss O... or me... yet, LOL!)

I really hope your weekend has been blessed, that your Holy Week is even moreso, that the joy and victory of the risen Lord be yours, moment by moment, in a very personal way... and that this new month brings many new surprises and Easter joy throughout!

May today and every day bring to you a ridiculous abundance of whatever you need. May all your concerns, struggles, anxieties and fears fall like ashes as you rise on eagle's wings, SOARING above all that would hinder you along this tremendous adventure of being and becoming all you are created to be. May the grace of God simply "overtake" you moment by moment. May the joy and victory of the risen Lord be yours in a very personal way... may you always be overwhelmed by the grace of God, rather than by the cares of life!

Well, now, I'd say this is just downright awesome, Ramona! I consider something like this to be the biggest measure of success anyone could ever think of, life just don't get no better than that! All that hard work is paying off, kudos for getting yourself there, feels good, doesn't it? It's all good, and this was an awfully nice blog to read on a glum day!

That is wonderful! What a lovely story.

Although I do weigh myself, I don't solely rely on the scale to measure my progress. I use the tape measure and also my clothing and how they fit on me.

Keep up the great work! emoticon

This is such a beautiful moment on the journey. The people we love the most are able to revel in our successes in more intimate ways. There's nothing more visceral than the bond between a mother and child. It is soundless, needing no words, because all that is required is a look or a touch to communicate the deepest thoughts and feelings.

Congratulations on discovering a great new way to measure your success. Know that in the future, your daughter will remember each of the convictions you have shared with her, and that they will help her to develop the strength to overcome any obstacles she finds in her own path. Your gift to yourself will surely last for generations. Well done!

I know that feeling. Last year, when my daughter came home for a college break, she was so excited at being able to put her arms all the way around me. That was a different perspective on success!

That is a wonderful way to measure success! The Mr and I often comment about how great it is to be able to hold each other closer now. It's heaven, isn't it?
