Baking My Way Through Betty Crocker's Cooky Book

Saturday, March 31, 2012

One of my friends (NYYCHICA) decided she would like to cook her way through a cookbook. I told her I would bake through a baking cookbook. I decided on Betty Crocker's Cooky Book. I picked up a copy of the reprint of the 1963 book...full of fun '60's drawings.... a few years ago but had only made a few cookies from it. I thought it would be great fun to work my way through it.

The first recipe in the book is Applesauce Cookies. Spicy and cakey. Very tasty :-)

What a fun idea! My mom had that cookbook, along with the classic Betty Crocker cookbook of that decade that was (and is) my cooking bible! I love to bake, but I tend to collect so many recipes online, in magazines, and from other people that I'm afraid I'll never get to them all!

Great idea!! I'm more of a baker myself than a cook and I tend to do the same old same old so making ones way through an entire book would open up the dust on recipes that are gems which I otherwise may have overlooked. I guess the same could be said for other things in life to look beyond routines - fitness, work, hobbies. emoticon

What a fun project! I love old cookbooks. Particularly Junior League cookbooks. Regional favorites are always interesting to try.

How fun is that! WOOO HOOO!!! Maybe I need to do something like that to get my mind off all these documents! LOL...but then again I cannot exercise so I would be eating them all! :(

Hope all is well with you Nat, miss chatting with you, just swamped at work. And these days it seems I call in sick once a week now b/c I cannot even get out of bed, which is so NOT ME. :(

Have a great Monday, chat with you later.

I grew up with that book! I'm going to ask my mom if she still has it. I bet she'll send it to me. My favorites were the gumdrop cookies. Awesome project, Nat!

    Dear Nat,

Thanks for the memories! My mom had that great old Betty Crocker Cookie book! Every recipe in that book is great. For the first part of my life I though Betty Crocker was the only person on the planet that knew how to write a cookbook. My mom taught me how to cook and bake using classic Betty Crocker cookbooks. I got a Cub Scout merit badge for cooking. Yes, I am a guy and I can cook and bake! I like knowing what is in what I eat.

Unfortunately, when my mom died my dad gave her assortment of cookbooks to my older brother's wife. My older brother's wife is an terrible cook. My dad reasoned that she would become a better cook if she had good cookbooks. Nope, didn't happen. Great cookbooks can't make a bad cook into skilled cook.

I can practically taste those yummy spicy applesauce cookies just like my mom used to make.

I have that one. I collect old Betty Crocker cookbooks. Mother was a good cook, but not so good teacher. I taught myself to cook with a Betty Crocker cookbook I checked out of the library. emoticon
