Old Habits Die Hard

Saturday, March 31, 2012

My husband is out of town this weekend. Which used to result in me lovingly return to bachelorettehood - staying up late, watching girly movies, eating chips & queso for a snack, a huge bowl of Lucky Charms for breakfast, and takeout for lunch/dinner.

I didn't eat like this most of the time when I lived on my own (sometimes there was top ramen ;) ). But I find that when I'm on my own my instinct is to go back to eating my go-to splurges that my husband either doesn't or won't eat.

So last night, after a day in which I'd screwed up my whole eating schedule at an all-day meeting by skimping on breakfast and skipping lunch, I found myself starving, and jonesing for some high-fat takeout. Ohh, it called my name. I had a deep urge to sit down to an old BBC period drama and a tasty (and huge) bowl of Indian curry or Thai noodles, followed by Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

I'm writing today to say that I partially overcame my urges. I did get takeout. But I kept it to something I could track, and that I knew wouldn't blow me out of the water, calorie and fat-wise. I had a burrito from Taco del Mar and some tortilla chips. Not the best option, but nowhere near as bad as what I had in mind. Later in the evening (during my BBC period drama marathon - hey, a girl's gotta live), I had a huge bowl of homemade popcorn. Overdid it on the portion, but avoided the chips & queso I'd had in mind.

Today I'm feeling back on track - had a healthy breakfast, went to Zumba, tracked my food yesterday, will have a smoothie for lunch, and am planning a healthy dinner. I call that progress.

I like how you did allow yourself some splurge, so there wasn't a sense of being deprived, but kept it to what wouldn't sabotage you.
