Woodard Bay- Herons and More

Friday, March 30, 2012

We went looking for a heron colony today and found it and more. It was a nice green area to walk with several trails. One took us to a bay where the largest harbor seal nursery is. Right next to that is an old railroad trestle that is home to thousands of bats. We will go back at sunset sometime to see them come out.
It was a fun day with lots of walking and picture taking. We only got rained on a little bit of the time=)

Beautiful photos. The wooded area is very much like the one we walk in, but we have nothing as spectacular as your view at the end. The Heron's are beautiful and so many nests. What a big Heronry! We used to have a lot of Heron's round here when we first moved in and they took all the Koi Carp from our pond, but they all moved on except 1, when we had the great storm which blew down a lot of their tall trees where they were nesting. emoticon for the blog!

Great job! He actually got 5 birds in the shot you said he got 4 birds in. Three on one side of the branches and 2 on the other side.

I can't make up my mind which pix I liked the best. They were all super. Not sure I'd want to be around the bats when then come flying out. Seems like a place you wouldn't want to be in a storm, even being a bat!

Think I liked the mossy bench and the fern tree the best but I'm still thinking.

That is a very nice place! Especially when you can see all those herons! Love them! We see them quite often down here in FL! It is something to see them in Washington- I thought they were more of a southern bird. You have so many cool places to hike!! emoticon

What awesome pics!! My sister lives near there and I'm going to see her Sunday. I was thinking of suggesting we go there but saw the sign saying it's closed starting, of all days, Sunday! Oh, well! Kinda a mean April Fool's joke on me!

Oh what a beautiful area! So glad you got a chance to get there this year before the closure for the season. As always I am so jealous of the green wet areas you have to hike. I like our hiking areas but yours are so much more lush and green. Each area for hiking has it's own special beauty like my area and your area. I so love you sharing your pics of your hikes with us.

I like your pictures the herons are so beautiful. I live in Utah and have a little lake close to my house I like to walk at and the are avocets there. I am weird but I like birds when their knees are backwards from ours.
