Climb for Air 2012

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

So this weekend I participated in and completed the climb for air stair climb. We Climbed the First City Tower in Downtown Houston.

It is a 48 floor skyscraper. We woke up about 6:15 and arrived downtown about 7:45 for our 8:35 climb time. They had breakfast there you could choose from different choices. It was cool to see all the climbers of ages from teens to seniors. Here is a pic pre-climb.

So we met up with our third teammate and got in line to climb. Once we got in line and right before I took off I actually got interviewed by some guy with a camera. He asked me why I was doing the climb. I told him because I lost 112 pounds and in memory of my friends who lost mothers to Lung Disease.

So we started the climb. At about floor five my quads started burning. I had done a pretty intense leg workout on Thursday so I was tightening up they had rest and water stations every 10 flights. So at 10 I rested a little and got some water and stretched. I did the next 10 with Korina helping each other get through them. At 20 Korina wanted me to go ahead and get the best time I could. So she rested a little at 20 but I skipped that rest area and headed on up. I get to 30 and I am sweating hard and the breathing is definitely getting more difficult so I take a break to catch my breath. So as I am leaving the rest station on 30 I see this young lady doing the climb with a toddler on her back!!! I was like wow!! So I was really determined to finish. I headed up and my pace slowed as I advanced but I just kept moving a step at a time. Along the way they had volunteers cheering you on and also had others doing the climb encourage you and I did the same. When I hit the top it felt really good! To finish and know this was something I was now capable of knowing in the past I could not have done this at all. I had a personal goal of completing it in under 20 minutes. Now that official times have been released I accomplished that my official time was 19:42!!!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! to Colleen, Russell and Marissa!!!! You guys helped me not only reach but surpass my fundraising goal!! Thank you so much for that. Please let me know if I can ever return the favor!

Here is a team pic post climb!

Way to go Chris, awesome job! But, next time you plan to do something similar, don't work your legs in the gym for at least 5 days prior to the event! Your legs must have felt heavy as lead for a while. lol

But seriously, excellent job brother.

Glad to help. I think people are always looking to help, but we wait for someone to set it all up for us..lol. The event organizers are fabulous people. People climbed, some donated, others cheered/volunteered,but none of it would be possible without the organizers.

Climbing is harder than a lot of things. Not may people head over to the stairclimber..lol. That machine is always empty unless some 19 year old girl shows up. It should have a sign on the side that says " for ages 16-25 ". Good job finishing under 20 minutes.. I am sure it felt like an hour.

I hope they raised a lot, and many people get helped out. Also hope you had fun with Korina, and teammate # 3. Could you have imagined this a year ago? Losing weight opens up a lot of options to share events with loved ones, and brings people closer. Until you experience it, you don't realize how guarded you have been, whether it is not going to the pool, or climbing a 48 story skyscraper. Plus , your looking pretty slim these days..lol.
