My Mom had a stroke today, she is 90.

Sunday, March 25, 2012

I went over to the nursing home right after my sister called to tell me the nursing home had called her while we were at church. When I got off the elevator on Mom's floor, one of the aides at the Nurses' Station said, "Here's Terrie." The head nurse was writing up Mom's chart at the Nurses' Station and there was another aide that was taking notes.

The head nurse tried to make me aware of what had happened and told me she had called my sister. I told her I had just talked to my sister.

I went back to Mom's room and Mom was asleep. She looked fine. My husband had dropped me off and went to do errands. Later, an aide came in and woke Mom. She said, "Betty, look who's here." Moms's face lit up and I could see her mouth is not the same and when her eyes opened, the left side was drooping.

Mom cannot make herself understood now when she talks. I had to lean over the bed rail to hear her and her voice is very gravelly. She said something about "being ready" and "3 of them." I just said, "Yes," and smiled through tears." Mom seemed like she was a struggling to focus her eyes. She would look my way and smile. I stroked her head and hair.

Mom was coughing and I thought she coughed up something and I got a tissue. Mom couldn't get it to the edge of her mouth and I went out to the hallway looking for help and didn't see anyone and put on the call button. When I went back to Mom's bed, there was nothing there and I guess she swallowed it. Mom could very well choke to death, because she will not know to look for the call button. Nobody ever came.

I asked if she would like to go back to sleep and she nodded and went back to sleep.

My husband came to pick me up and I asked the head nurse about telling Mom that she had a stroke. She said she didn't think Mom had the mental capability to understand what a stroke is. She also mentioned that kid, Georgia, and I told her I did not want her in Mom's room, that Georgia wouldn't listen. She told me if I found her in there, to come get a nurse.

I don't know, I think the call button was still on when we left. But we are in a new stage where Mom wants to communicate, but I can't understand her or make out what she is trying to say.

I am asking for prayer for my Mom from my Spark friends. Please don't reply to this post as I feel obligated to respond and I don't know how busy I will be in the following days. My computer monitor is also acting up like it is going to go out. If that happens, my computer will be useless until I figure out how to fix it.
