This is my first day following Dr Fuhrman's Eat to Live program. Using his book, Eat to Live, I'm following a "hard core" 6 week program which promises that I will help to reduce the risk of diseases such as Type 2, heart disease and cancers. It also has an upside of great weight loss success!
For the next 6 weeks I will be concentrating on my diet - whole foods, plant based with no dairy or animal products. The first 6 weeks is a bit more strict as it reduces the amounts of grains and starchy carbohydrates. It also cuts out all processed fats. I'm allowed to eat as many fruits and vegetables as I like (although starchy ones are restricted), at least 1 cup of beans or legumes every day and 1oz of nuts or seeds. This is an example of a Dr Fuhrman lunch (from yesterday):
Breakfast this morning was a large pink grapefruit, a kiwi fruit and an apple. That was a few hours ago and I am feeling a little hungry. However, I'm drinking a nice cup of Rooibus and vanilla tea which is definitely helping.
I'm excited about lots of things to do with this "diet" - although it's not a short term fix. It's a continuation of my lifestyle changes following my adoption of the Forks over Knives approach.
So - Dr Fuhrman said that it's not only the weight that will improve but other things too so here's an inventory of my current status! I hope to keep you updated as I progress through the 6 weeks of the initial plan.
Energy/Tiredness: Yes, lack of energy. Last night was a late one (although I'd been falling asleep in front of the TV) but I am feeling tired. Recently (since the start of my more vegan diet) I have found I get to sleep more easily.
Headaches: Dull headache. I've found I've been getting a few recently.
Bloating: Not as much as before I started eating less meat and dairy but I still feel a little bloaty.
Sinus/Mucous (sorry if TMI but I've read that dairy aggravates this): Sinus pain a couple of weeks ago was pretty bad. I'm still experiencing some mucous at the back of my throat/nose.
General aches and pains: I always ache. My back is sore, probably from over-compensating for the rib I popped last week. My hips are sore. My knee is a bit achey too.
Gastro-thoughts: Not feeling 100% in this department. A little slow to move things out (sorry again for TMI!) earlier this week but could be due to bad eating at the weekend (blame it on the buffet as opposed to boogie!).
And my weight on day 1: 84.8kgs or 186.9lbs.
6 weeks also coincides with the Vancouver half marathon (6th May) so hopefully this will also help to increase my strength and stamina and allow me to run (rib permitting) faster because I will be carrying less weight.
Fact of the day (Bombshells - I told you this already!):
100 calories of broccoli has over double the amount of protein as 100 calories of steak!
So - here I go... I'm eating to live people not living to eat!!!! If anyone is interested in joining me on this journey, let me know as I'd love to swap tips and ideas.
